Description

The Survey Technician plays a key role in supporting civil engineering and land surveying projects by collecting, analyzing, and processing field data. Working closely with surveyors and engineers, this position involves operating survey equipment, preparing maps and reports, and ensuring data accuracy for project planning and execution.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in conducting land surveys for engineering, construction, and mapping projects.
  • Operate and maintain survey instruments such as GPS, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Collect and record accurate field data, ensuring proper documentation and reporting.
  • Assist in boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction staking, and as-built surveys.
  • Process survey data using CAD and GIS software to create maps, drawings, and reports.
  • Interpret engineering and survey plans to ensure fieldwork aligns with project requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers, surveyors, and project managers to support project goals.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and company protocols while working in the field.
  • Maintain and calibrate survey equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Assist in preparing legal descriptions, plats, and other survey-related documents.


Qualifications & Skills:

  • Associate's degree or certification in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience with surveying equipment such as GPS, total stations, and data collectors (preferred).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD Civil 3D) and GIS applications (a plus).
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills for data processing and interpretation.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and rough terrain.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, legal descriptions, and maps.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (if required for fieldwork).


Preferred Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience in land surveying or civil engineering (preferred but not required).
  • Knowledge of state and local surveying regulations and standards.


Work Environment:

  • Fieldwork in various outdoor environments, including construction sites, highways, and undeveloped land.
  • Office-based work for data processing and mapping.
  • Travel to project sites will be required.



Under direct supervision, provides survey support to the Resident Engineer on projects to ensure construction compliance with plans, specifications, and contract documents. Tasks may include assisting with and receiving training in performing land surveys and conducting research on various construction projects of basic complexity which may include visually mapping/drafting legal boundaries and the potential placement of structures, utilities, and installations. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for uniformity, thoroughness, and legal compliance for survey documents.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

* Under direct supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from property/utility records, deeds, land/property titles, structural plans, and other matrices for land surveying activities.

* Under direct supervision, use survey instruments to perform various types of property surveys on projects of basic complexity and/or scope, which could include boundary, existing condition, topographic, as-built, subdivision, and profile maps.

* Provides entry-level land surveying assistance that accounts for accurate survey data, and determines conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, boundaries, and construction specifications.

* Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications related to site observation and survey findings using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, 2D/3D illustrations, and reports.

* Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, studies and surveys, and construction.

* Complete training on assigned tasks.

* Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to KLJ's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

* Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications:

* High School Diploma.

* General awareness of land survey principles, practices, process, methods, and techniques

* General awareness of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

* Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

* Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.

* Ability to work independently under supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

* Basic proficiency with survey equipment (e.g. Leica Robotic Total Station), Auto Cad, Civil 3D, Microstation, and/or Geopak.

* Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical work week.

* Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Hours and Travel:

This position requires the individual work 40 or more hours per week with 10% of the time spent in the office and 90% in the field.
