Position Summary

DEFINITION:

Under supervision by appropriate supervisor in Facilities on the assigned shift, this position performs routine and specialty cleaning work in assigned areas; participates in the setups and break down of events; and promotes the mission and vision of the college.

CLASS CHARACTERTISTICS:

Under minimal supervision, the custodian II position is expected to perform at a higher skill level of custodial duties in and around campus facilities and off site facilities as assigned; troubleshoots, performs minor repairs and responds to emergency calls for service; reports safety issues to supervisor and has the ability to write work orders as assigned by supervisor; assists with furniture and office moves as well as the coordination and setup and takedown for a wide variety of campus and community events; works closely with employees and the public to meet the custodial needs of the campus indoor and outdoor facilities. The incumbent will ensure that the areas for which they are responsible for are maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. This position will require a greater knowledge and skill level with all equipment and machinery used by the custodial department in the performance of their duties and will require the knowledge and skills to train custodial I, substitutes, and student workers in the safe operation and care of all custodial equipment. Assist lead custodian in absence of personnel; Day custodian II worker will fill in for the mail room, shipping and receiving clerk in their absence and perform other duties as assigned.


Essential Functions and Qualifications

  1. Perform all phases of custodial work as assigned such work as cleaning classrooms, restrooms, offices, halls, meeting areas, dinning areas and train staff in proper, safe custodial methods;
  2. Participates and oversees deep cleaning assignments of college facilities during recess/ vacation periods or when assigned. Refinish hard wood floors;
  3. Restock paper towel holders, soap dispensers, toilet paper holders, towel racks and similar dispensers in restrooms, locker rooms and laboratories and request supplies as needed;
  4. Assists with inventory supply and equipment;
  5. Ability to remove and replace, or write work orders when repairs to walls or special anchoring is required for the replacement or repair of product dispensers;
  6. Removes and replaces lamps and reports and marks lighting fixtures requiring additional work to lead or supervisor prior to generating a work order;
  7. Cleans and makes semi-skilled repairs to custodial equipment; makes semi-skilled repairs of a non-technical nature to keep assigned area safe and operating including but not limited to adjusting shades, blinds, and furniture, tightening toilet seats, and adjusting shelves on bookcases;
  8. Assists in coordinating, moving and arranging furniture and equipment, and setting up buildings and rooms for events including but not limited to stage and gymnasium set-ups;
  9. As assigned lock or unlock classrooms, restrooms, and other desigated buildings or areas. When leaving areas secure doors, windows and buildings; turn off unnecessary lights; and ensure buildings are secures;
  10. Reports safety concerns, vandalism, graffiti, sanitary and fire hazards;
  11. Inspect fire extinguishers and emergency lights on a monthly basis and reports findings to supervisor;
  12. Loads a truck, drives a light truck and other district vehicles, in delivering or picking up equipment, furniture, and supplies; operates a forklift;
  13. Trains and oversees student help and substitutes;
  14. Attends and participates in shift meetings;
  15. Is responsible to keep up to date with SIPE online safety training and attend all other training activities relevant to the custodial position;
  16. Basic computer skills to access and write emails, work orders and to keep current with safety training modules and activities;
  17. Will be required in the absence of mail courier or shipping and receiving clerk to perform those duties as assigned;
  18. Will be required in the absence of the custodial lead to assist supervisor in the direction of staff with assignments;
  19. Performs other related work as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Modern cleaning methods;
  • Safe work practices related to custodial care;
  • Safety Data Sheets, their purpose, and locations;
  • Cleaning chemicals and their proper use;
  • Planning and organization work scheduling procedures and techniques;
  • Knowledge of proper refinishing of wood floors;
  • Knowledge of other specialty custodial equipment.

Demonstrates ability to:

  • Learn and follow established cleaning methods and schedules;
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment efficiently and safely;
  • Make semi-skilled non-technical repairs; and perform routine preventative maintenance to custodial equipment;
  • Work independently, as well as with students, staff and faculty;
  • Oversee train and direct subs and student workers assigned to work with them as well as custodian I staff;
  • Cooperatively work with custodial and other Facilities staff;
  • Drive work truck and other vehicles required in the performance of custodial duties;
  • Understand and carry out simple oral and written directions;
  • Basic computer skills to access and create work orders and email.

Working Conditions

  • Duties are primarily performed on the Santa Maria campus and other off-campus sites;
  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors;
  • Duties are performed during inclement weather;
  • This position will work closely with Lead custodian and Supervisor in training and overseeing daily activities of the custodial department;
  • Duties in the absence of mail courier and shipping and receiving clerk may be performed by this position;
  • Work requires standing and walking for prolonged periods;
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday;
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person or on the telephone, with executive, management, supervisory, academic and classified staff and the general public.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and/or moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds;
  • Handle equipment and operate machinery and power tools necessary to perform job duties;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel;
  • Reach in all directions;
  • Frequent pushing and/or pulling of objects weighing up to 120 pounds with occasional heavy work;
  • Handle equipment: Hand truck(dollies), pallet jacks;
  • Work at heights; ascend and descend ladders, and work in multi-level buildings.

Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.



Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED required. Individuals possessing the knowledge and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education and experience.

Licenses and Certificates Required:

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License;
  • Forklift certification within one year of employment;
  • Hardwood floor certification or hardwood floor finishing and maintenance experience 2 years.

Additional Information

The desired start date is March 2025.This a full-time, 37-hours-per-week, 12-month, classified position.

Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
