Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
One year of experience working in a library or similar setting
Knowledge of bibliographic principles desired;
Knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.
Familiarity with OCLC WorldShare, ILLiad or other library software
Position Summary
The Borrowing Specialist is responsible primarily to the Borrowing Supervisor for processing interlibrary loan materials obtained from other institutions for University of Georgia faculty, students, and staff and for maintaining records of these transactions. Work is performed and records maintained using ILLiad (automated interlibrary loan system). Position assists UGA users by phone and by email with questions regarding policies and procedures. Position facilitates the flow of print material in the Department by opening and sorting both incoming and outgoing mail to the appropriate station. Position will also assist Document Delivery and Lending by picking up requested items and scanning articles to be supplied to UGA users and to other libraries. Work is performed under general supervision following established practices and procedures.

Borrowing Support

  • Prepares loans received for UGA users from other libraries using ILLiad (automated interlibrary loan system); verifies that correct material was received, identifies problems and refers to supervisor when necessary; records due dates, restrictions, and number of volumes; prints book bands and signature slips; sends email pickup notifications via ILLiad and sends to the designated pickup location.
  • Monitors books awaiting use by UGA users by checking due dates on a daily basis and notifying patrons who have not picked up items as necessary.
  • Forwards non-responsive patron information to the Borrowing Supervisor as necessary.
  • Answers patron inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and requests.
  • Process and troubleshoot scanning requests

Materials Maintenance

  • Returns materials to lending libraries by checking items into ILLiad and preparing mailing labels.
  • Process outgoing Borrowing items by preparing and routing material to the loading dock for pickup
  • Assists in opening, sorting, and processing all types of incoming mail received for Borrowing and Lending on an as-needed basis
  • Assists in picking up needed items from the stacks and scanning articles for Document Delivery and Lending on an as-needed basis

  • Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via GRAPEVINE (the Libraries' listserv) and other communication tools, and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.
  • Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the office and organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.
