Job Summary/Primary Purpose: The Health & Fitness Manager is responsible for leading operations, cultivating, and executing impactful programming and developing and managing staff to successfully execute the strategic objectives of the Health & Fitness department.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:



  • Advance strategies to achieve sustained utilization and excellence in programming to improve sustainability, meet member and guest needs, and improve client satisfaction.
  • Implement the short and long-range strategic vision and objectives for the Health & Fitness department through development and communication of specific and measurable objectives and priorities.
  • Establish and promote a culture in which excellent customer hospitality thrives, all guests feel welcome, and relationships flourish.
  • Provide effective staff management to include regular guidance, oversight, and successful application of reviews and performance feedback.
  • Grow the knowledge and professional expertise of staff to provide excellence in support to members and guests.
  • Evaluate classes and programs to ensure efficient execution, evaluate effectiveness, and make necessary adjustments to insure consistent impact.
  • Actively utilize key performance indicators to guide decision making on current and future programming.
  • Make certain staff is prepared to provide effective emergency response following TSA policies and provide clear and concise documentation to manage critical situations.
  • Monitor budgets and supply proper submissions of requests for equipment maintenance and purchasing along with maintaining current inventory.
  • Ensure staff and instructor certifications are maintained and appropriate documentation is collected and retained.
  • Follow Divisional and Kroc Center human resources policies and procedures - and provide required documents to support staff hiring, training, discipline, and terminations.
  • Actively participate in and engage with community events and outreach to promote involvement with the Kroc Center.
  • Assure appropriate training and use of available technologies to maximize efficiencies and data collection.
  • Coordinate with marketing and program director to provide proactive, timely, and clear information about departmental programs and activities.
  • Participate in the Manager on Duty program.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities: The Health & Fitness Manager shall oversee all Health & Fitness staff.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) in a health or fitness related field preferred. Also preferred at least 3 years of experience in developing, planning, managing and supervising facilities and programs and/or 3 years previous experience in teaching a variety of programs in fitness fields.

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.



  • Good communication skills including interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, train and develop staff to achieve objectives.
  • English proficiency required; Spanish language skills helpful.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Exceptional flexibility and ability to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate and work within a team.
  • Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters.
  • Strong independent judgement.
  • General computer knowledge is required to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.


Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/AED/First Aid) certification is required and must be maintained on a bi-yearly basis. Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training as established by The Salvation Army and a minimum of 2 certifications from a nationally recognized fitness organization or ability to achieve within the first 90 days of employment is required.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

This position requires frequent outdoor supervision due to number of programs supervised during spring and summer months. Physical requirements include good speaking, hearing and vision. Excellent manual dexterity. Ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods of time, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment. This position will require the ability to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds occasionally.

Working Conditions: The majority of the workday will be in a mixed environment including offices, service counters, and other program spaces. In addition, portions of the primary work facility may be considered humid (outdoor fields and adjacent areas) while other locations (gymnasium) may be considered moderately loud in nature.
