Position Overview

We are seeking a Vice President to join our Tax team. The primary responsibilities of our team include overseeing tax compliance and providing internal consulting across our fund complex. In this role, the Tax Manager will leverage their subject matter expertise in tax strategy to advise and collaborate closely with Portfolio Managers, Account Managers, Transfer Agents, Legal, Compliance, Product Managers, and others on technical tax matters. Reporting to the Head of Fund Administration, the candidate will serve as a key tax advisor for our U.S. regulated funds business, which comprises more than 200 different fund products, including open-end, closed-end, ETF, and variable annuity funds. The candidate will provide market coverage and add value consulting with Portfolio Managers and Product Strategists throughout product design and the pre-trade through the post-trade cycles to explore additional opportunities for tax optimization.

Responsibilities

The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing tax expertise in the following areas:

  • Advise on tax implication during the design and development of new fund products.

  • Address and resolve fund qualification matters to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Review and provide input on tax-related content in fund documents, including prospectus, Statements of Additional Information, , and shareholder reports .

  • Manage tax considerations related to shareholders, including Qualified Dividend Income, Foreign Tax Credits, Dividend Received Deductions, and flow-through taxation for foreign investors.

  • Analyze tax implications of various financial instruments and transactions related to fund investments, including fixed income and equity securities, derivatives (including foreign currency derivatives), structured finance products (e.g., asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities, grantor trusts, REMICs, CMOs, CDOs, CLOs, and other credit derivatives), Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), Passive Foreign Investment Companies (PFICs), and distressed debt instruments.

  • Provide tax guidance on alternative investments, including commodities, CPI-linked instruments, and real estate loans.

  • Oversee key tax processes, including fund distributions, fiscal year-end tax provisions, and calendar year excise tax calculations prepared by third-party service provider.

  • Ensure adherence to U.S. tax regulations for mutual funds, including the 1940 Act and Subchapter M of the Internal Revenue Code.

  • Oversee all tax matters related to financial statement audits, ensuring compliance and accuracy.

  • Collaborate with PIMCO departments on technical tax matters related to product development, implementation, distribution, regulatory compliance, and ongoing operation

  • Participate in researching relevant tax regulations, rulings, and procedures and applying interpretations to various financial transactions, trading strategies and fund structuring.

  • Provide support on international tax issues as a needed.

  • Utilize your strong working knowledge of common RIC book-tax differences to inform tax strategies and compliance efforts.

  • Analyze complex financial instruments and related structures to identify tax implications and opportunities for optimization.

  • Draft and review tax and legal documents with high technical proficiency, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Work closely with analysts, product teams, and portfolio managers to proactively integrate tax considerations into investment strategies.

  • Stay current on potential legislation and new tax regulations through active involvement with industry organizations, assessing their impact on financial products and funds.

  • Provide expertise in analyzing corporate actions for taxability determination, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree required,

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience within a Big 4 accounting firm or equivalent industry experience focused on mutual fund tax and operations.

  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. mutual funds regulated under the 1940-Act, Subchapter M of the Internal Revenue Code, and common RIC book-tax differences.

  • In-depth understanding of complex financial instruments and related structures.

  • High technical proficiency in drafting/reviewing tax/legal related documents.

  • Ability to work closely with analysts, product teams and portfolio managers to integrate tax considerations proactively into investment strategies in a fast-paced environment.

  • Active involvement with industry organizations to stay updated on potential legislation, new tax regulations, and their impact to financial products and funds.

  • Expertise in analyzing corporate actions for taxability determination.

  • Broad understanding of accounting and tax principles.

  • Knowledge of federal securities law is desirable.

  • CPA or LLM is highly desirable.

  • Ability to embrace and adapt to a constantly changing regulatory and technological environment.

  • Proven ability to communicate complex tax issues clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.

  • Strong business analysis and project management skills.

PIMCO follows a total compensation approach when rewarding employees which includes a base salary and a discretionary bonus. Base salary is the fixed component of compensation that is determined by core job responsibilities, relevant experience, internal level, and market factors. The discretionary bonus is used to award performance and therefore is determined by company, business, team, and individual performance.
Salary Range: $ 150,000.00 - $ 225,000.00
