THE POSITION

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is on the lookout for a dedicated Park Resource Ranger to join their team, specifically at the Poe Valley State Park Office, which is part of the Reeds Gap State Park Complex. This role involves crucial public safety responsibilities, including patrolling the area, observing activities, directing visitors, and monitoring the swimming zone within the Reeds Gap State Park Complex. The primary goal of this position is to uphold order and ensure the safety of all visitors enjoying the park's amenities.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for welcoming visitors and special interest groups at both the park entrance and the park office. You will address inquiries related to park amenities, recreational activities, program schedules, historical context, environmental features, and nearby attractions, while also managing various informational requests from park guests. Additionally, you will distribute brochures and other informational materials, as well as clarify park rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

You will utilize the Bureau of State Parks reservation system software to register park visitors for campsites, pavilions, boat launches, and mooring permits, among other services. This task includes processing point-of-sale transactions, collecting payments, issuing receipts, reconciling cash drawers, and securely transporting cash and receipts to the park office safe. You will also be responsible for making bank deposits.

In this position, you will mediate minor disputes among park visitors to ensure the needs of both the park and individuals are met. You will operate park communication equipment, including radios and telephones, and use email to coordinate with park staff and partner agencies for both routine and emergency communications. Daily ranger reports will need to be prepared as required.

Your duties will include patrolling the park using various modes of transportation, such as motorized vehicles, bicycles, and on foot. You will also operate boats to monitor park waters and assist boaters in distress. In emergency situations, you will respond promptly to requests for help from both employees and visitors, and you will organize and participate in search and rescue operations on land and water to locate lost or injured individuals.

As part of your responsibilities, you will monitor the swimming beach during routine patrols and complete the necessary documentation. You will track and record daily park attendance according to established methodologies, post park boundaries, and designate hunting and non-hunting areas. Additionally, you will assist in marking and maintaining trails, perform traffic control duties, and administer first aid, including CPR and artificial respiration, to injured visitors. You will also ensure the security of park buildings and facilities and conduct inspections of park structures.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal Full-time employment without benefits.
  • Shift hours and days vary due to operational need, with a 30-minute lunch

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.
  • All employees must obtain valid certification in standard first aid and adult, child, and infant CPR approved by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or equivalent within 60 days of employment.

Legal Requirements:
  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
  • In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 this position is required to complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years.
