Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Reporting to University Archivist and working with both the University Archivist and the Special Collections Librarian, the Temporary Archives Specialist processes paper and digital archival and record collections in a variety of formats.

Description of work:

  • Arrange and describe archives records and publications, providing intellectual and physical control over collections and entering information in ArchivesSpace,
  • Arrange and describe manuscript collections, providing intellectual and physical control over collections and entering information in ArchivesSpace,
  • Create metadata for Digital Collections items from University Archives and Special Collections, populating Dublin Core fields with standard terms and already-created descriptions
  • Regularly staff the Reading Room service desk, providing general reference services at our public services desk


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 1+ years experience in a library setting.
  • Related archival repository experience may be substituted year for year for the required education.
  • Collegial and team-oriented
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with computer software such as Excel and Teams
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Master of Library Science or comparable academic archival training
  • 1+ years of experience working in an academic library or with archival materials
  • Knowledge of description and metadata standards, including DACS and Dublin Core
  • Knowledge of American history broadly, and North Carolina or Wilmington history in particular

Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave.
