Job Summary

The Assistant Safety and Compliance Officer applies professional knowledge and expertise in the transportation industry and supports one or more program(s) within the area of parking and transit safety and risk. Work is reviewed upon completion to ensure predetermined objectives are adequately met and that application of professional/technical judgment is sound. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Decision-making is based on established procedures; relevant laws; regulations and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant methodologies; impact on other transit programs, and senior management approvals as required. Decisions may impact individual work, other departments and / or segments of the organization.

The position involves hands-on development, implementation, and monitoring of passenger bus fleet safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace, while promoting staff engagement. Includes continual risk mitigation across multiple sites in conjunction with reviewing, improving and evolving all of our policies and training programs to ensure the business is a leader in the field of fleet safety and risk mitigation.

The Transportation Department operates a $40+ million-dollar annual budget with an employee base of 165+ FTE, and oversees assets exceeding $100 million dollars. Key components of Transportation Services include: Shuttle Services, Parking Operations, Fleet Management, and a variety of Transportation Demand Management programs. Efficient and effective administrative management of this department is crucial in that Transportation Department, as a self-funded business operation, has a broad-ranging impact on the campus and its mission. The Safety and Compliance Officer is responsible to create, monitor and update the shuttle driver training and on-boarding process; oversee any remedial training (mitigation) programs; convene and adjudicate driver Accident Review Boards; and maintain all driver safety training records. He/she may also assist with safety and ADA Compliance related matters for all parking facilities.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $73,100 - $115,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Transportation Services at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) provides essential transit, parking, and alternate commuter services that impact benefit nearly every member of the UCSF community, including faculty, staff, trainees, students, patients, and visitors. The Department's programs and services indirectly benefit the local communities surrounding UCSF's many campuses and facilities in terms of accessibility and community livability. Under direct supervision of Shuttle Supervisors, the Principal Automotive Equipment Operator or Shuttle Driver will operate a variety of passenger shuttle buses throughout the City and County of San Francisco. The primary purpose of the position is to safely transport staff, faculty, and students who are required to travel between campus sites to fulfill their work and school related obligations. The drivers also support patient transportation to various UCSF clinical facilities on regular shuttles or on-demand Jitney service.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area, and a minimum of 3-5 years of transit operations and/or transit safety related experience at a supervisory level and/or equivalent experience / training.
  • Current commercial Class B license with Passenger Endorsement and medical certificate.
  • Air brake certification
  • Defensive Driving Training Certification
  • Solid knowledge of transit service operations, safety, policy and regulatory compliance, and commercial professional passenger-transport licensing requirements.
  • Strong political acumen skills dealing with variety of transit customers.
  • Strong employee supervision and leadership skills to motivate and inspire staff to improve customer and transit services.
  • Strong proficiency in defensive driving skills, customer service, and problem solving.
  • Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.
  • Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
  • Strong interpersonal, communications, active listening, coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and administrative analysis applications.
  • Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.

  • Ability to prioritize effectively and establish and meet schedules in a high-volume, politically sensitive environment.
  • Strong team building skills.

License/Certification
