To qualify as an applicant, please note the following criteria:
  • Must be a Graduate of a Master's or Doctoral degree in nursing program from an accredited college or university OR a Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant. With a degree conferral date between June 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.
  • Must have less than one (1) year of professional APP experience, at program start.
  • Must be willing to commit to a one (1) year Fellowship Program.

JOB SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellow functions under the general APP Standardized Procedures/Delegation of Services approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). Specific functions pertaining to the Service, Clinic or Department are established by the Advanced Practice Provider and his or her supervising physician(s), and approved by the appropriate medical and nursing administrators, the IDPC, and the Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital Medical Board and Board of Directors. Supervision is provided by attending physicians in the Clinic, Service or Department. The specific mechanisms of supervision used may be:

*Supervision is provided by the supervising/sponsoring physician with clinical privileges at LPCH, or designated attending physicians in the Clinic, Service or Department. Standardized procedures, approved by the supervising physician(s) and the IDPC, are a mandatory mechanism of supervision. Other mechanisms of supervision used may be:

*Direct on-site, electronic or phone supervision by a supervising physician.

*Chart reviews on random charts by the supervising physician or designee.

*Chart audits on random charts as an integral part of selected quality improvement programs.

*Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) through tracking of performance indicators.

Additional supervision requirements for the physician assistant shall include co-signature of all charts within 14 days or 5% of notes written by the Physician Assistant may be signed and dated by a supervising physician within (30) days. Note: If this latter method of supervision is chosen, the department is responsible for submitting quarterly chart completion audits to Health Information Management Services (HIMS) to verify compliance.

Additionally, the supervising physician must adopt protocols to govern the diagnosis and management of patients as per California Code of Regulations.

Overall Description:
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) fellowship program is a 12-month program for highly engaged advanced practice provider (nurse practitioner or physician assistant) graduates. Throughout the 12-month program, APP fellows will rotate through various clinical rotation blocks as outlined in the clinical fellowship track. In addition, the fellows will also attend clinical didactic and professional didactic sessions throughout the course of the year. The program is intended to support the transition of APPs to function in complex pediatric subspecialty practice. At the end of the fellowship program, the fellow would be eligible to apply to open APP positions at Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

The APP Fellow may provide only those clinical services which he/she is competent to perform, which are consistent with the APP education, training and experience, or which are performed in collaboration with a physician.

The APP fellow consults with a physician or other clinician regarding any task, procedure or diagnostic problem which the APP fellow determines exceeds his/her level of competence or shall refer such cases to a collaborating clinician.

Clinical Patient Management:

*Evaluates and treats patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty, according to written standardized procedures.

*Obtains complete histories and performs pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients.

*Performs or requests and evaluates diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient.

*Administers, orders, and prescribes medications.

*Orders and collects specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products.

*Orders physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services.

*Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling

*Recognizes and considers age-specific needs of patients.

Additional Responsibilities:

*Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable.

*Obtains informed consent, as indicated.

*Initiates arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and completes appropriate paperwork.

*As directed by the researcher, enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders the necessary tests and medications.

*After appropriate training, assists the surgeon in the operating room. The First Assistant directly assists the surgeon and practices under the supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase. The First Assistant must adhere to standardized procedures and not concurrently function as a scrub nurse.

Additional Skills:

*Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.

*Recognizes situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiates life-saving procedures when necessary.

*Facilitates the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed.

*Facilitates collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources.

*Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.

*Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

*Other duties as assigned.

Additional program requirements for the APP Fellow:

*Initiate/Complete a professional project during the time of the fellowship suitable
for presentation or publication.
*Attend state, national, and/or local APP society meetings as appropriate
*Attend assigned clinical didactic sessions in each clinical rotational block
*Attend assigned professional didactic sessions throughout course of fellowship
*Complete all required evaluations throughout the course of the fellowship as assigned and by the due date.
*Participate in periodic evaluations of progress to evaluate teaching and learning.
*Will receive a formal annual performance evaluation by the Manager of Advanced Practice

Professional Development with input from supervising physician(s) and/or physician delegates, APP peers and the supervising manager/director.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Master's or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited college or university OR Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.

Experience: New graduate APP's or those with
  • RN Experience/Patient Care Experience strongly preferred
  • Inpatient pediatric nursing experience strongly preferred/ focused clinical rotations in inpatient/ambulatory pediatric settings
License/Certification:
  • Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA)
Physician Assistants:
  • Physician Assistant by California Physician Assistant Board
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Nurse Practitioners:
  • Nurse Practitioner by California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Registered Nurse by California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Furnishing license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) within 3 months of hire
  • National Board Certification as a (Nurse Practitioner) from an agency accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS)
  • Additional board certification(s) may be required by certain specialties/departments
*If authorized by the supervising physician to issue outpatient drug orders for controlled substances, the Advanced Practice Provider must be registered with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and CURES database.

    Pay Range
    Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.
    Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
    Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.
    Minimum to Midpoint Range (Hourly): $73.95 to $73.95
