The Head of Business Risk is a risk champion within our first line of defense (FLOD), the revenue producing Lines of Business (LOB) and enterprise functions. The Head of Business Risk will play a critical role in developing and leading the Business Risk Office that ensures that a cohesive structure and process exists to manage the various risk impacts that face our business units. This leadership role is pivotal in enhancing risk awareness across the organization, ensuring that business units effectively identify, assess, mitigate, monitor and review risks.

In addition to managing the Business Risk Office function, the incumbent will also manage and influence a network of business risk managers embedded within various lines of business and functional areas, fostering a culture of proactive risk management and consistent processes.

Position Accountabilities

Leadership and Strategy:



  • Lead Business Risk Office team that operationalizes the bank's integrated risk management framework to support first line of defense risk management program.
  • Develops and executes strategy for development of Business Risk Office to support increasing maturity and size of bank.
  • Lead the partnership between first and second line of defense to implement the framework for standards and practices related to risk management, in the context of the broader ERM program, for all first line business and functional units.
  • Mentor and develop the business risk managers, fostering professional growth and expertise.


Collaboration and Influence:



  • Foster collaboration and relationship development with risk managers, the Chief Risk Officer, and second and third line of defense partners, to develop and implement well-managed risk practices.
  • Work closely with senior leadership and business unit heads to promote a risk-aware culture and facilitate risk-informed decision-making.


Risk Assessment and Management:



  • Responsible for identifying, measuring and managing and reporting risks (financial and non-financial) to business line management, 2nd line and Senior Management on an ongoing basis
  • Lead team of risk managers (direct and indirect) that play a lead role in the self-identification, evaluation, and remediation of risk deficiencies and risk events including root cause analysis and process improvement recommendations. Partner with appropriate second- and third-line areas such as Credit, BSA/AML, Compliance, Audit, Fraud, Legal, Security, Operational Risk, etc., as necessary to ensure risk events are properly addressed, documented and reported.
  • Establish the common practices of the business risk manager role for the identification and assessment of risks across all business lines, ensuring comprehensive risk coverage and consistency in approach.
  • Utilize effective challenge to promote two-way dialogue on strategic business and risk decisions, provide transparency to business and risk leadership before issues arise, and enable the business to operate within established and agreed upon risk appetite.
  • Establishes limits and metrics, calibrated to the Firm's risk appetite statement, which support day to day decision making


Reporting and Analytics:



  • Partner closely with management on the development of key risk metrics, controls, new products, business cases, risk assessments, policies & procedures, incentive plans, and LOB risk profile.
  • Present to the Executives leadership as necessary.
  • Participate in any management level committees as appropriate relative to risk and compliance-oriented activities.


Regulatory Compliance:



  • Obtain and maintain necessary training to keep current on regulatory compliance and bank operations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Federal and State banking laws and regulations.
  • Interact with regulators as appropriate.


Organizational Relationship

This position reports to the Chief Enterprise Services Officer

Position Qualifications

Education & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA or relevant professional certifications (e.g., FRM, CRM) preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in risk management within the banking or financial services sector, with a proven track record in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and industry best practices related to risk management


Knowledge & Skills



  • Deep understanding and experience in assessing risk in each component of the bank.
  • Extensive knowledge of banking laws, regulations, operations and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the Federal Reserve's Enhanced Prudential Standard and expectations with respect to Enterprise Risk Management in an institution greater than $50 billion in asset size.
  • High level of experience interacting with Executive Management.
  • Advanced written, oral, interpersonal and negotiating skills with ability to prepare and present technical presentations and guide internal customers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including knowledge of process review improvement techniques and the ability to lead through change.
  • A proven track record of establishing a proactive, constructive dialogue and partnering effectively with business leaders.
  • Advanced PC skills including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.



Salary offered will be based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. This position is also eligible to participate in either an applicable incentive compensation plan for the position or a discretionary profit sharing bonus program.
