Job Summary Provides proactive and practical legal solutions to protect Corewell Health and advance its mission, vision and strategies. Works independently to manage and respond to legal issues that arise throughout the company, as assigned. Specific knowledge and expertise required in labor and employment law including, but not limited to, (1) counseling HR and management regarding employment terminations, reductions in force, disciplinary actions, FMLA and ADA compliance, and harassment and discrimination complaints, (2) drafting and reviewing employment policies and documents in compliance with applicable laws, (3) representing employers in federal and state administrative agency proceedings, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board, and/or Department of Labor, and (4) conducting investigations into allegations of workplace harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. Assists Legal Department leaders in managing the business and affairs of the Department.
Essential Functions
- Engages in efforts to continuously improve the provision of "exceptional client experiences" to all clients, whether by inside or outside counsel.
- Works proactively to develop and maintain relationships with assigned business units, with the goal of enabling the business units to meet strategic objectives.
- Works with business units to proactively identify and mitigate legal risk.
- Responds timely to legal issues that arise throughout the company as assigned, including reviewing contracts, giving legal advice regarding proposed actions or existing situations, and addressing compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
- Keeps current on new laws, regulations, and guidance that impact the organization in legal areas of responsibility assigned and makes appropriate recommendations to assist in maintaining compliance with such laws, regulations, and guidance.
- Assists the VP & Deputy General Counsel and other Legal Department leaders in the overall management of the department, including strategic planning, the preparation of budgets and budget performance, evaluation of the performance of attorneys, paralegals and staff, and management of services provided by outside counsel.
- Responsible for reviewing, drafting, and amending documents, policies and procedures, providing legal advice regarding proposed actions or existing situations, preparing responses to federal and state regulatory authorities, and addressing compliance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and manuals.
- Completes day-to-day work with limited oversight from up-line attorney.
- Performs other duties and special projects as required.
- Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.

Qualifications
- 3-5 years of relevant experience Labor and employment legal experience - combination of private practice and in house (specific experience outlined above) Required
- 1-2 years of relevant experience in healthcare industry or serving healthcare clients Preferred
- Required Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
- CRT-Attorneys working as counsel (ATTORNEY) - ABA American Bar Association Upon Hire Required
