Job Summary
Assumes shift accountability for managing, supervising, and coordinating the operational and financial effectiveness and efficiency of the nursing service/ unit of the hospital. Some service lines may require the ability to be available for on-call to better support the nursing service/unit. Additionally, Inpatient Supervisors may be required to fill-in for the hospital supervisor as needed. Key responsibilities include assisting with the following: clinical support, unit based goal setting, program development, fiscal management, resource allocation, standards of care, policy and procedure development and interpretation, performance improvement, performance correction, and coaching and mentoring.

Corewell Health Nurse Supervisors are REQUIRED to obtain their Nursing Administration or Professional/Specialty Certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire in to the role.
Essential Functions
  • Assumes shift accountability for the delivery of quality services by direct supervision of assigned staff and interdisciplinary collaboration. Evaluates nursing care and completes rounds to ensure that care is carried out in accordance with regulatory, accrediting and professional practice standards and the philosophy, policies and procedures for the Nursing Division and organization. Ensures practice is in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code. Assists with interdisciplinary relationships to support improvements in care delivery, patient, staff and physician satisfaction. Evaluation of care delivery is achieved through performance improvement process, monitoring of quality indicators, evaluation of staff performance, and unit rounding.
  • Supports a work environment that promotes retention and embraces diversity. Provides leadership in a manner that is culturally sensitive and preserves autonomy, dignity and rights of patient's, families and staff. Acts as resource for staff to identify and address ethical issues within nursing and assigned area. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff and organization data.
  • Collaborates with unit leadership to evaluate programs, policies, procedures, and services that support patient care delivery in assigned area. This includes effective utilization of workforce, facilities and equipment. Participates in and facilitates staff involvement in the development and review of policies, procedures and guidelines based on evidence based practice, research findings, and Spectrum Health quality outcomes.
  • Assists unit leadership with budget to ensure sound fiscal management consistent with the goals of the unit. This includes efficient use of resources and supplies while overseeing unit operations. Maintains the standards for unit operations in the management of admissions, transfers and discharges, utilizing appropriate staff skill levels, staffing plans, and patient placement plans.
  • Collaborates with leadership to monitor and measure the quality, safety and outcomes of nursing services for assigned area. Assists in quality improvement monitoring at the unit level. Participates in interdisciplinary performance initiatives.
  • Encourages an environment supportive of nursing research and promotes evidence-based, clinically effective care in order to positively impact patient outcomes for assigned area. Supports a continuous learning environment to ensure on-going education and development opportunities for staff based on populations served, professional practice, new technology and/or required skills. Assists in the identification of trends and competencies in nursing practice.
  • Creates a climate of effective communication in all interactions. Collaborates with unit leaders and staff to create and execute a vision for change that mobilizes, encourages, and unifies interdisciplinary teams. Develops, maintains, and evaluates a professional practice environment that empowers and supports staff participation by encouraging shared decision-making, accountability, and autonomy in nursing practice. Serves as a role model and mentor to staff, colleagues and students.
  • Ensures that patients, their families, visitors, customers, and employees are treated in accordance with Spectrum Health core values and service standards. Demonstrates teamwork and integrity in all work-related activities. Ensures that work performed supports Spectrum Health's mission to improve the health of the communities we serve.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing (BSN) Required.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) Preferred.
  • Skills, knowledge, abilities typically gained through 1+ year of related clinical experience in area of specialty Required.
  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required.
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required.
  • AHA Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Required.
