RECREATIONAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR (SEASONAL)
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified candidates for Recreational Program Directors for the Parks Division within the Department of Public Works and Parks. Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Coordinator, the position is responsible for supervising seasonal staff and volunteers, overseeing spray park operations, and managing park permits. The position will liaise between the Parks division and non-profit or other organizations hosting summer programs, overseeing YMCA operations, Friends Groups, and Division special events. This position will observe youth behavior, program staff, and enforce appropriate safety regulations & emergency procedures within the policies and guidelines of the City of Worcester.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:



  • Recommend hiring of staff to maintain operations of spray parks
  • Supervise, train and direct program staff in policies and procedures
  • Keep an accurate account of all revenues and expenses
  • Coordinate the use of facilities, equipment, etc. for all program offerings.
  • Coordinate and work in partnership with other City of Worcester Departments
  • Maintain an inventory and recommend ordering of program supplies
  • Maintain payroll records on all seasonal program staff
  • Plan, organize and supervise special events and trips if needed
  • Evaluate all programs and program staff at the conclusion of each session and make recommendations to Parks and Recreation Coordinator for improvements and future courses of action
  • Answer telephones and disseminate information to public regarding programs
  • Prepare all promotional materials for all program offerings
  • Employ emergency procedures associated with the summer programs
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for participants within the mission and outcomes of the program
  • Meet and communicate regularly with program staff regarding concerns, updates, and challenges of program operations
  • Submit all required paperwork and documentation on due dates
  • Perform other duties and tasks as deemed necessary as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Experience with planning recreation programs
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Leadership skills including knowledge of supervising staff
  • Ability to perform manual labor and work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR/AED
  • Effective decision-making and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work up to forty (40) hours per week
  • Ability to perform daily routine maintenance and safety checks of recreation equipment
  • Ability to maintain clean program facilities and emptying trash barrels
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to pass CORI/SORI


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • Currently enrolled in a college/university program OR;
  • any equivalent combination of education and two (2) years of supervisory experience directing recreation programs, intermural sports activities or therapeutic recreation which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered in lieu of above requirement.
  • Experience in planning recreation programs for youth between 6 to 16 years of age
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to pass CORI/SORI check


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • First Aid and/or CPR/AED Certification
  • Two (2) years in a supervisory capacity that demonstrates efficiency in directing recreation programs, intermural sport activities or seasonal programs
  • Basic administrative abilities including report writing and/or monitoring program budgets


SALARY: $21.00 per hour, seasonal, non-benefitted.
