This position will report to the EVP and General Counsel. This position will provide legal support to all areas of the Company, but primarily the insurance product, policyholder services and claims areas. Protects the interests of the Company and its assets and properties through effective management of risk and compliance with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines and law.



WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:



  • Estimated Base Salary: (Levels have variable responsibilities and qualifications):

    • Assistant General Counsel: $135,000-$165,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.
    • Associate General Counsel: $155,000-$175,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.


  • Benefits and Perks, 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match.
  • Unlimited vacation each year.
  • Regular associates receive 9 paid holidays in 2025.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:



  • Provides specialized legal counsel to all levels of management within assigned business unit and/or function in support of their tactical and strategic business initiatives to include: sale, distribution and administration of all insurance products. Reviews, interprets and provides legal advice regarding various insurance and service agreements.
  • Identifies, prioritizes, and leads all legal activities in support of business objectives of assigned business unit and/or function. Develops and maintains effective business relationships with management, outside counsel, government agencies, policy-holders or their representatives in order to facilitate the handling of legal issues.
  • Contributes to the achievement of business objectives by developing close professional relationships with personnel of all levels, by providing specialized legal counsel, knowledge, skills and decision making in support of tactical and strategic business initiatives.
  • Be responsible for a diverse range of litigation and pre-litigation matters in a wide range of practice areas and in numerous jurisdictions across the country.
  • Drive strategy and execution on litigation matters and potential disputes involving the Company.

  • Manages outside legal counsel to include reviewing and approving case and project budgets, counsel fees and expenses. Determines cost effectiveness of outside legal counsel.


  • Supervise and collaborate with outside counsel to efficiently resolve disputes and manage all aspects of outside counsel relationships.


  • Maintains expertise in and analyzes state and federal insurance laws and regulations. Reviews proposed business plans, policies and practices, and provides recommendations to ensure legal and ethical compliance in achieving business objectives.

    Represents the Law Operation on various Company committees.


  • Work cross-functionally with business teams to mitigate risk and to ensure compliance with regulatory obligations.


  • Provide advice and counsel to various internal clients to proactively address and resolve current and potential disputes.


  • Provide risk management advice to business clients while supporting business objectives.




WHAT YOU'LL BRING:



  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school and a license to practice law in Nebraska (or to qualify for licensing in Nebraska).
  • Excellent organizational, legal, analytical, communication, negotiation, drafting and legal writing skills.
  • Proven track record of confronting and successfully resolving complex legal and compliance matters with significant financial and business impact.
  • Ability to recognize and weigh business and legal risks, lead strategically and advance innovative solutions.

  • High sense of urgency and the ability to work independently in a team-oriented environment, as well as the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet firm deadlines.


  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively, work diplomatically, and foster relationships with individuals at all levels including internal contacts, outside attorneys and clients.


  • Possess demonstrated knowledge and experience in areas of insurance and litigation.


  • Considerable experience with legal matters from an administrative, contractual, statutory and regulatory standpoint.

PREFERRED:



  • 7+ years legal experience, including substantial experience in litigation.
  • Experience to include taking depositions, writing briefs, arguing motions, trial experience, mediation and settlement conference experience, and performing other functions related to the direct representation of clients in litigation.
  • Experience in group benefit products and with the laws affecting the Group Benefit Services Operation, including ERISA.
  • In depth knowledge of state insurance laws and federal laws relating to product development, policy filing, marketing, taxation and the distribution of various insurance products, as well as a strong working knowledge of federal and state laws impacting insurance and other litigation.
  • Thorough knowledge of the internal practices and processes on multiple line insurance companies distributing products through multiple distribution systems.
