Join our team as a Youth & Teen Center Mentor at the McPherson Youth Center and help shape the future of our local youth!


About the Role:

As a Youth & Teen Center Mentor, you will play a vital role in fostering a welcoming, safe, and enriching space for youth and teens. You will collaborate with the Camp, Youth & Family Director to develop and implement programs, coordinate events, and engage with the community to support youth development. This role is an opportunity to make a lasting impact while upholding the YMCA's mission of strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.


Key Responsibilities:
Youth Programs & Event Coordination

  • Plan, organize, and facilitate daily programs, recreational activities, and special events for youth and teens.
  • Assist with coordinating field trips and enrichment activities that align with youth interests.
  • Ensure all programs reflect youth development best practices and YMCA values.


Outreach & Community Engagement

  • Support outreach efforts by attending school visits, community meetings, and local events.
  • Serve as a point of contact for youth and families, providing program information and connecting them with community resources.


Mentorship & Leadership Development

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with youth by fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Act as a mentor and role model, providing guidance and encouragement.
  • Support youth leadership initiatives, empowering young people to take an active role in program planning.


Safety & Facility Oversight

  • Ensure the Youth Center remains clean, safe, and welcoming at all times.
  • Supervise the space, including behavior management and conflict resolution as needed.
  • Assist in safety drills and emergency response procedures.


Administrative & General Support

  • Maintain accurate attendance records, program documentation, and reports.
  • Communicate program updates to youth, families, and community partners.
  • Support additional tasks assigned by the Camp, Youth & Family Director to enhance the success of the Youth Center.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Experience working with youth and teens in community, educational, or recreational settings.
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with diverse groups and collaborate with schools, families, and community partners.
  • Passion for youth development, mentorship, and engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, with the flexibility to work some nights and weekends as needed for programs and events.
  • A collaborative team player who is highly motivated by and dedicated to the mission of the YMCA, with an appreciation for its vision and values.


Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for extended periods.
  • Exposure to varied temperatures and weather conditions when participating in outdoor activities.
  • Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Position requires bending, kneeling, leaning, twisting, and reaching as needed.
  • Ability to speak clearly and effectively communicate with youth, families, and team members.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond quickly to critical situations and the physical capability to take swift action in an emergency.
