Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations, West Campus, the Assistant Director of Access Control Services provides enterprise-wide leadership in the development, implementation, and oversight of UCSF's Access Control and Security Systems program. As the leader of the Center of Excellence (COE) for Access Control and Security Systems, The incumbent sets the vision for building security access, protective services, and related technologies, ensuring alignment with institutional objectives and fostering a culture of security and operational excellence across UCSF's diverse campus environments including UCSF Health, campus sites, and outlying areas, including but not limited to Fresno and Oakland. This position drives enterprise-wide standardization of access control, security video management systems, intrusion systems, key management, and protective services while applying advanced IT security principles and risk management strategies to address complex security challenges spanning the UCSF Health research facilities, administrative offices, campus operations and other outlying areas.

As a key backup to the Director, this role assumes elevated responsibilities as needed, including implementing cross-location policies. The incumbent collaborates with executive leadership, IT security, Facilities Services, and public safety to implement system-wide policies, governance structures, and change management strategies that enhance security and operational efficiency. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees daily operations, vendor and contract management, budget performance, quality assurance, and compliance while leading innovation in security infrastructure. This includes ensuring adherence to Title 24 regulations and working closely with campus authorities to maintain compliance across all systems and operations. The role also involves partnering with UCSF architects and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to align security initiatives with long-term campus planning and operational goals.

This Assistant Director plays a critical role in forecasting expansion needs, analyzing data to meet UCSF standards for new facilities, and tracking Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Key Focus Areas (KFAs) to align operations. Additionally, the position oversees skilled trades, including locksmiths, key cutters, and service technicians, ensuring effective security infrastructure management.

By driving continuous improvements and fostering a collaborative, enterprise-wide approach to security, the Assistant Director strengthens UCSF's long-term security strategy, enhances operational continuity, and safeguards its mission-driven environment. This leadership role ensures UCSF's security posture remains resilient and adaptable to emerging threats and challenges.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $110,400 - $235,400 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience with an emphasis in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, or in a related field and/or equivalent education/training.
  • 5 years of experience to include 2 years management experience in the building and security access controls industry performing duties such as recruiting, training, providing feedback, coaching, mentoring, providing input to performance reviews, oversight of union and non-union employees, budget management/oversight.
  • Certification in specialty skilled trade relevant to Access Controls & Security Systems.
  • Knowledge of secure hardware, software, and network design techniques.
  • Knowledge of conceptual database design.
  • Advanced experience in incident response and digital forenscis including reporting.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, and network security issues and approaches for physical security systems and hardware.
  • Demonstrated skill at administering complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software, and networks for physical security software.
  • Knowledge of enterprise-wide master keying system, best practices, and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of test application code in client server environment
  • Expert knowledge of data encryption technologies with experience selecting and applying appropriate data encryption technologies for physical security systems and hardware
  • In-depth knowledge of various areas of IT. Broad knowledge of the IT environment, including IT security function. Has solid knowledge of information systems function.
  • Knowledge necessary to design, set up, operate and correct malfunctions involving technology systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software.
  • Advanced knowledge of secure software development. Advanced knowledge of business and process analysis functions.
  • Has solid interpersonal and management skills. Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
  • Excellent critical thinking, persuasion / negotiation, mentoring, and problem solving abilities.
  • Has solid knowledge of related principles and concepts to provide solutions to more complex and diverse information systems issues. Solid knowledge of the applications programming development function. Solid ability to gather, organize, and analyze data in the completion of assignments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Requires solid ability to communicate highly technical information in a clear and concise manner to both technical and nontechnical personnel.
