Summary: The Program Manager Accounting is primarily responsible for ownership of the accounting and reporting for a specialized and complex functional accounting area. Examples of specialized accounting areas include investments, foundations, and leases. Depending on the level of activity System-wide, the Program Manager of Accounting may supervise 1-2 senior accountants and be responsible for reviewing their work and training them to improve their technical knowledge of the assigned area. However, the Program Manager will not be the direct reporting manager. The Program Manager and any other accountants on their team will report to either an Accounting Manager or Accounting Director. The Program Manager is responsible for timely completion of month-end close activities, including preparing all journal entries in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), proper review of journal entries prepared by team members to ensure the operating effectiveness of internal controls, and financial statement analysis relevant to their assigned functional responsibilities. The Program Manager Accounting is expected to function at a high level of accounting knowledge coupled with ability to direct others and give feedback on a daily basis as to work product. This position requires a strong understanding of United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), particularly in technically complex areas. The Program Manager Accounting should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of each journal entry, evaluate the appropriateness of the entry (including the GL accounts used and the financial statement line item classification), explain the impact to the financial statements, and how the entries comply with US GAAP. They are responsible for ensuring appropriate and relevant supporting documentation is attached to the journal entries recorded by them or others on their team. In some cases, appropriate support will include developing accounting estimates using professional judgment. The Program Manager Accounting is expected to develop policies for making these estimates that are applied consistently and in accordance with US GAAP. The Program Manager Accounting is also responsible for preparing relevant information for financial statement disclosures related to the specified area and responding to external audit requests. They are expected to provide auditable schedules that support the amounts in the financial statements and related disclosures. Previous healthcare experience is preferred but not required. Direct experience related to the specific complex area of accounting for which the Program Manager is responsible is required. The Program Manager Accounting is responsible for completion or review of monthly balance sheet account reconciliations related to the assigned functional accounting area. The Program Manager Accounting is responsible for ensuring the team is meeting month-end close deadlines and communicating timely when any deviation from the close schedule is expected. They should proactively look for ways to make our processes more efficient and maintain or reduce the overall close timeline. Timeliness, accuracy, and the ability to prioritize and meet critical deadlines are essential. For each month-end close, the Program Manager Accounting is responsible for preparing financial reports and variance analysis of results for both the functional area assigned, and discussing results with financial executives. The position requires strong analytical skills and the ability to problem solve. The Program Manager Accounting is responsible for assisting other teams across the System (both at the corporate office and at our facilities) with information requests related to the assigned functional area, as needed. They are expected to work closely with other teams to resolve issues timely and to the satisfaction of all parties. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
