Responsibilities
Position Description: The Activities Coordinator is responsible for ensuring quality and comprehensive activities and recreation programming for our residents. Responsible for creating, implementing and disseminating all related resident activities and related communication both oral and written. Following a therapeutic schedule 24/7 and ensuring staff follow the therapeutic and activities schedule 24/7. Plans and coordinates all resident outings and events both on and off campus. Coordinates and communicates all resident activities for Holidays and non-school days. Understands need to maintain budget for therapeutic activities.

Follows and adheres to all established Hughes Center guidelines, protocols and shift/Post Orders; Interacts with all Hughes Center personnel, residents, visitors, customers and contractors in a professional and helpful manner while effectively and professionally responding to their stated or potential needs; Effectively and consistently communicates with all departments at The Hughes Center; Assists in providing and helping to ensure a safe working and residential living environment; Represents The Hughes Center in a professional manner at all times while on duty both on and off the facility grounds; Interacts with the local and extended communities in a professional manner while exercising expectations of The Hughes Center's "Good Neighbor Policy"; Represents The Hughes Center in a professional manner while attending training, seminars, special events and other activities associated with The Hughes Center. Promotes an environment of teamwork with all direct care staff and other departments; Effectively meets or exceeds all expectations of Service Excellence while performing these duties. |
Responsible for ensuring The Hughes Center's Residential Program has a quality and comprehensive resident activities and recreation program. Responsible for the creation, implementation, coordination and dissemination of all related resident activities and related communication both oral and written. Coordinates and communicates all resident activities for Holidays and non-school days. Works closely with the Clinical Director and Program Director to plan and coordinate all resident outings and events both on and off campus including holidays and non-school days and after-school activities. Ensures the resident activities calendar, activity notifications and special events are effectively communicated, posted, and disseminated (electronically and in hard copy). Assists staff and provides support by introducing and educating staff on facilitating activities. Effectively interacts with all departments. Partners and interacts with both the Medical and Clinical Departments at The Hughes Center for identifying medical, physical and treatment plan limitations or special needs of residents when considering activities. Utilizes community resources when planning outings and off campus activities. Researches and utilizes other means of resources including internet, library, site visits, publications, etc. for ongoing development and enhancement of the comprehensive activities program and related activities. Ensures resident's rights are honored by encouraging questions regarding treatment and explaining procedures; Assists residents with the Grievance/Complaint/Request process; Responsible for being versed and keenly aware of resident Human Rights and expectations of care per guidelines and polices of The Hughes Center, Licensure and CARF; Responds effectively, professionally and calmly to crisis situations both with residents, staff and other emergency situations; Assists and ensures resident's needs for clothing, hygiene items, accessibility to drinking water; Attends and/or contributes information to treatment team meetings, Therapists, Case Managers or other designated Clinical staff; Attends all mandatory in-service training; Reports serious incidents and allegations to Risk Manager in an appropriate timeframe; Ensures prescribed activities and outings are conducive to and for the residents at The Hughes Center taking into consideration Mental Health, and Physical Health needs; Effectively meets or exceeds all expectations of Service Excellence while performing these duties. |
Is accessible, approachable and visible to staff during work hours; Substitutes when applicable and necessary for any and all MHT job duties during any and all shifts; Maintains current approved certifications in CPR, HWC/ Verbal De-escalation and all other required training certifications as prescribed by The Hughes Center; Assists staff and provides support to employees by introducing and educating staff to activities; demonstrates and instructs activities to residents; Makes unannounced facility rounds while on duty to all units ensuring scheduled activities and related times are happening as scheduled while documenting and reporting discrepancies with such to Program Director and Clinical Director. Effectively meets or exceeds all expectations of Service Excellence while performing these duties. |
Provides support for the Program Director, Scheduling coordinator, CEO and all other Department Heads as directed or necessary; Maintains effective communication to administrative personnel; Provides logistical and Data reports to the CEO, Program Director, Human Resource Director and Clinical Director or any other designated and administratively approved entity; Correlates, compiles and presents survey and programmatic results associated with the activities program; Notifies facility leadership/AOC in a timely manner on identified issues or concerns; Effectively meets or exceeds all expectations of Service Excellence while performing these duties. |
Physical Demands: Must be able to:
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Effectively use the full range of body motion
- Successfully complete and pass all components of Handle with Care/Verbal De-escalation Crisis Intervention Training
- Effectively perform facility approved First Aid and CPR techniques.
Qualifications
Qualifications: Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Must have the ability to communicate verbally and written skills. Ability to rotate shifts to include weekends and holidays as necessary. Ability to work on various units and give clear instruction to staff. Ability to maintain resident's confidentiality. Knowledge of principles of psychology and child growth and development are useful. Ability to provide Limit-setting and appropriate responses to staff and adolescents in a caring, mature manner, while maintaining professional boundaries is necessary. Must consistently exhibit mental and emotional and stability to understand and perform the essential functions of the job. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. College Degree Preferred Experience: Must have two years related experience with adolescents and children or related college coursework in a related field. Previous experience with emotionally disturbed, Intellectually Disabled, or physically disabled persons preferred. Licensure: Current Virginia driver's licensure with a good driving record, CPR certification, First Aid Certification, and Crisis Management Certification.
