Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose |
To provide swim lessons private or group, to children and adults of all levels and abilities based on American Red Cross (
ARC) standards and program requirements. |
Essential Functions |
- Provide swim lesson for patrons of beginning to advanced skill levels.
- Responsible for leading a group/individual in swim lesson activity with proper oversight to successfully integrate the lesson, in a safe manner, reducing risk of injury.
- Work with varying age groups, with varying levels of skills and abilities.
- Instructs and evaluates swimmers with the ability to curtail instruction to the needs and abilities of the students.
- Ability to be punctual, organized, approachable and energetic.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Two (2) years of experience on a swim team or have passed the American Red Cross level 5 of swim lessons.

Preferred Qualifications |
- American Red Cross Lifeguard American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (will provide training if not yet obtained prior to start date).
- Prior experience of instructing swim lessons.
- Former aquatics athletes.
- Knowledge of and the ability to demonstrate skills provided in swim lessons offered.
- Ability to demonstrate skills as required for class content and use teaching aids such as kickboards, diving rings, lifejackets, etc. to compliment instruction.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to positively interact with general public to command attention and deliver instruction effectively.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
- Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Physical Requirements |

Instructor is required to be in the pool with the students. May require lengthy periods of standing, walking and running. May be required to assist and rescue struggling swimmers. May be required to perform
CPR if needed. Frequent repetitive motion of body. Occasional climbing stairs. Constant communication using both spoken and written means. May be required to lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during class times. Classes are offered 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Swim Instructors should be available to work morning, evening, or both. Not required to be here for all 10 weeks of classes. |
Hiring Range |
$16.50 - $18.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. |
