Job Summary

The California Institute of Technology seeks an individual to oversee the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCE) Solution State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility. The Manager of the NMR Facility is responsible for developing and maintaining state-of-the-art solution-phase NMR capabilities. Currently, the facility includes two Bruker 400 instruments with autosamplers, one Varian 600, one Varian 500 with autosampler, one Varian 400, and two Varian 300 spectrometers. The Manager provides strategic direction, advocacy, day-to-day management of the Division's NMR research needs, oversight of Divisional solution-phase small molecule NMR instruments, consultation with users on advanced applications of NMR for research problems, and education of the user group on relevant research and advances relating to NMR and its applications through individual instruction and informal course offerings.

Essential Job Duties
  • Maintains the lab's NMR spectrometers and all associated equipment, performing or organizing all necessary repairs and maintenance.
  • Performs advanced NMR experiments in collaboration with Caltech students and faculty and provides guidance to researchers on experiment design and interpreting results.
  • Participates in writing manuscripts for publication and in writing grant applications, including shared instrumentation proposals.
  • Oversees a group of part-time graduate laboratory assistants, selects new assistants, and trains them on their responsibilities.
  • Oversees new user instrument training, either by coordinating the content of training provided by graduate laboratory assistants or directly running the training.
  • Responsible for collecting monthly NMR billing totals and forwarding these to CCE accounting staff; also works with CCE administrative staff on institutional cost studies and responding to any audits.
  • The NMR Facility Manager and EPR Facility Manager jointly operate and maintain a helium recovery system.
  • Coordinates with offsite facility users on day-to-day sample submissions and establishes or renews facility access agreements.
  • Keeps current with developments in NMR and commercial instrumentation through attendance at scientific conferences, and informs the Caltech community about such developments.
  • Guest lectures in graduate or upper-level undergraduate courses.
Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • 4 years of related experience, preferably in an NMR core facility.
  • Broad-based knowledge of NMR hardware and maintenance, the implementation of modern pulse sequences and related techniques, and versatility with associated computer software, including Linux and Mestrenova.
  • Good communication skills for interacting with researchers and faculty.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or familiarity with macromolecular NMR.
  • Experience with benchtop NMR instruments (used in CCE teaching laboratories).
  • Experience with mass spectrometry or other techniques used for small molecule structure determination

Hiring Range

$95,000 - $147,500 Per Year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
