Position Overview:
The University of Kansas seeks a Senior Tax Analyst to contribute to the mission of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The Senior Tax Analyst will serve as the primary information resource on tax compliance, tax analysis and tax research for KU. This position will assist in providing technical tax expertise to the varied University community in critical tax areas such as unrelated business income, tax-exempt debt, international transactions and activities, charitable contributions, employee compensation and fringe benefits, scholarships and fellowships, tax information reporting, sales and excise taxes, and other tax issues arising in higher education settings. This position will work to ensure the University's compliance with tax laws (federal, state, local, and international), manage the University's tax risks and liabilities, and expand the Office of the CFO's financial capacity to better facilitate the University's global activities and initiatives.

Senior Tax Analyst will develop a close working relationship with Offices of Audit, Risk & Compliance, Payroll and Procurement, work closely with schools, colleges and units on basic tax questions and develop, apply and interpret the university's tax policies and procedures. Senior Tax Analyst will serve as a resource for all tax issues of the University and demonstrate problem solving abilities on a regular basis. This position will also communicate with taxing authorities to resolve matters of dispute.

An ideal candidate will be resourceful and have a customer-service focus and will have tax experience working with tax-exempt organizations including higher education. They must thrive in a fast-paced environment and work well with minimum supervision.

Job Description
50%-Tax Advising:
  • Perform technical tax research and written analysis of tax laws, regulations and cases in areas of federal, state, local and international taxes including impacts applicable to the University.
  • Provide practical and technically correct advice and guidance to tax questions from the University community with a focus on delivering excellent customer service.
  • Assist with researching, analyzing, monitoring, and reporting foreign tax compliance rules and regulations as they apply to the University's research and collaboration activities.
  • Support risk mitigation strategies and advise stakeholders on appropriate in-country tax structuring options. Coordinate with internal and external service-providers to implement appropriate in-country tax structuring.
35%-Tax Compliance:
  • Draft tax research analyses and processes/documentation for internal files.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and international tax laws.
  • Support domestic and global tax administration and returns; develop timelines, manage preparation and review, tracking and analysis of income, losses, taxes, refunds, and tax authority correspondence; work with in-country tax advisors on the coordination and preparation of tax returns.
  • In consultation with university leaders, develop domestic and global tax planning strategies.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements and best practices designed to improve tax compliance, mitigate tax risks and identify potential tax reduction opportunities.
  • Review and analyze global projects for operating and compliance obligations of project principals, participants, and the University.
10%-Training/Education:
  • Keep current with new and changing tax rules and regulations and promote awareness of tax regulation changes.
  • Develop and provide training on tax matters to others, both within and outside of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer.
5%-Other:
  • Direct and coordinate communications with the IRS and other taxing agencies on basic communications, such as notices, correspondences, etc.
  • Demonstrate professional judgement in situations where clear direction is not available and/or interpretation is required.
  • Participate in other projects and complete other assignments as assigned.

Position Requirements
Travel for professional development conferences annually and travel between KU Lawrence and KUMC since this is a One KU position up to 25%.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or related financial or business field.
  2. Minimum five (5) years' experience in an accounting/finance/tax related environment.
  3. Minimum three (3) years' experience in tax compliance.
  4. Demonstrated experience using analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills, as demonstrated in application materials.
  5. Work experience that required attention to detail, as demonstrated in application materials.
  6. Previous work experience that required initiative and working independently, as demonstrated in application materials.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Advanced degree in taxation, law or related field, such as JD or MBT.
  2. CPA certification.
  3. Dedicated tax experience at a large entity or department, preferably higher education as demonstrated in application materials.
  4. Experience with tax compliance assistance on projects for complex organizations as demonstrated in application materials.
  5. Previous work experience that demonstrates knowledge of tax-exempt organizations and compliance with federal, state, local, and international tax laws, as evidenced in application materials.
