Job Summary

Coordinates Sterile Processing activities associated with reprocessing of equipment, supplies and instruments utilized for diagnostic or surgical intervention. Activities include decontamination, packaging, sterilization and issue to the user departments. Interprets policies, procedures, standards and regulations. Assists in care of patients of all ages before, during and after surgical procedures by performing scrub duties and related functions as a member of the surgical team on a novice to advanced beginner level completing identified job competencies. Maintains patient safety, privacy and confidentiality. Complies with legal aspects of patient care. Complies with sterilization standards and standards for handling sharps or contaminated instruments. Participates in quality improvement activities and completes hospital required education annually.

Accountabilities

  • Performs all duties of the Senior Sterile Processing Technician and Surgical Technologist.
  • Ensure proper staff coverage. Prioritizes and assigns functions, activities and task performance of staff.
  • Coordinates Central Sterile Services with Operating Room and other clinical unit functions in order to provide prompt, accurate and efficient service.
  • Observes, interprets and records biological, mechanical and chemical monitors appropriately. Initiates recall procedures as required.
  • Assists with preparation of time schedules, make daily assignments. Contributes to evaluation of performance for staff. Completes written documentation for personnel actions for employees and recommends appropriate actions to Supervisor/Manager.
  • Maintains the work environment. Complies with and enforces work flow and traffic pattern. Reports problems with equipment .
  • Monitors established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety regulations, environmental and infection control standards to include universal precautions and exposure prevention to self and others.
  • Assists with staff training and orientation. Conducts in-service education for new procedures, technology or equipment.
  • Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitor situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Takes action to correct.
  • Prepares for surgical procedures by collecting necessary supplies and instruments according to Surgeon Preference Card.
  • Prepares the Operating Room for cases by opening sterile supplies, setting up table, arranging instruments and supplies according to type of case.
  • Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure. Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, needles and sponges. Identifies and cares for specimens. Handles drugs and solutions under direction of the RN.
  • Models Prisma Health behavior expectations. Assists with coaching, mentoring and training coworkers as assigned. Trains and assists with integration of new team members. Shares knowledge, ideas and expertise to support the team and the department.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma in Surgical Technology
  • 3 years of Surgical Technology or Sterile Processing Experience

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses

  • Certification with NBSTSA Or NCCT certification accepted if ST was employed as a ST in S.C. prior to January 1, 2008 or completed a ST military training program.
  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician from CBSPD or HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association)

In Lieu Of The Above Minimum Requirements

In lieu of the education requirement only, must be current with mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education AND either have been employed as a ST in S.C. prior to Jan. 1, 2008 OR have completed a ST military training program.

Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020 are grandfathered under prior educational and experience requirements. In addition, team members must be certification eligible and will have one year to obtain required certification.

Other Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Steam, Sterrad, ETO Sterilization or other Low Temperature or cold sterilization systems.
  • Knowledge of Decontamination, Assembly, Packaging, and Sterilization Procedures and ability to identify various Surgical Instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of Instrument Tracking Systems (i.e. SPM, Censitrac, GE Ipath)
  • Completes annual15 hours of ST continuing education between Jan 1st - Dec. 1st each year.
