The Role

QuidelOrtho is looking for a Facilities Engineering Intern who wants to spend their 2025 summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.

The Facilities Engineer Intern will assist in the maintenance, operation, and improvement of building systems to ensure a safe, efficient, and sustainable work environment. This role involves working alongside experienced facilities engineers on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building automation systems, as well as supporting energy efficiency initiatives, preventive maintenance programs, and updating AutoCAD drawings for facility layouts and building infrastructure. The intern will gain hands-on experience in facility operations, project coordination, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 12-weeks. Start dates are June 2nd or June 16th, 2025

Office Location: Rochester, NY (Onsite-B313 & Canal Ponds) - Students must be in the area for duration of the program. QuidelOrtho is unable to provide housing accommodations.

The Responsibilities

  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections and support troubleshooting of equipment malfunctions.
  • Work with engineers to develop preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for facility equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining building automation systems (BAS) and energy management controls.
  • Update and maintain AutoCAD drawings for building layouts, equipment locations, and infrastructure modifications.
  • Assist in developing floor plans, electrical diagrams, and mechanical schematics using AutoCAD.
  • Work with the facilities team to ensure accurate documentation of space utilization and system upgrades.
  • Support as-built documentation for ongoing and completed facility projects.
  • Project Support & Sustainability Initiatives:
  • Assist in facility improvement projects, including renovations, equipment upgrades, and workspace reconfigurations.
  • Help analyze building layouts and space utilization to support efficiency improvements.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for maintenance and repair work as needed.
  • Support sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency projects and waste reduction efforts.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and other safety regulations.
  • Help track and document facility inspection reports, risk assessments, and safety procedures.
  • Support emergency preparedness plans, including fire protection systems and evacuation procedures.
  • The intern will present a PowerPoint presentation on his/her work to a cross-functional group.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

The Individual

Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's or Master's program in the Fall Semester 2024 at an accredited university or college
  • Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Able to start on either June 2nd or June 16th
  • Ability to complete a consecutive 10-12-week internship
  • Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for facility drawings and space planning.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with Revit, BIM, or other building modeling software is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred:

  • Rising Junior or Senior at an accredited university or college
  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS) or energy management tools.
  • Understanding of preventive maintenance programs and work order systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, NFPA, and other regulatory standards.

The Work Environment

No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required. 30% of time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone, 70% of the time at the desk on computer, doing analytical work.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
