Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
On behalf of the School of Government, the Public Defense Education team collaborates with the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services to meet the requirements of the Indigent Defense Services Act created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2000.
The School of Government works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. The School offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. Faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, reports, articles, bulletins, and other instances of print and online content related to state and local government. The School is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration. |
Position Summary |
The Adjunct Instructor of Public Defense Education will have primary responsibilities for teaching and curriculum planning in educational programs for defenders. Students include public defenders, private assigned counsel, managed assigned counsel, and private attorneys. Courses will provide skills that help students develop and learn how to apply a cohesive theory of defense at trial, understand how to structure arguments, and acquire legal writing and trial skills. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Juris Doctor |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
A minimum of ten years of professional work experience in criminal law, adult education, and training. |
