We are looking for an experienced Principal Advisor Corporate Protection to be a member of our Security Area of Expertise (AoE), which is responsible for ensuring that Rio Tinto's people, assets and reputation are protected. This is accomplished by developing and implementing effective security and business resilience programmes, systems and processes that are implemented consistently across the business.

In this role you will be a member of the Security AoE's Corporate Protection Team. This team of multi-skilled specialists focus on the design, delivery and assurance of Rio Tinto's security, business resilience and recovery, travel risk management and security and human rights governance frameworks.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Corporate Protection you will be:

  • Accountable for the design and maintenance of the Personnel Protection Program focussing on personnel protection and travel risk management tasks for high risk / high profile activities:
  • Support the design and maintenance of Crisis management and travel security risk programs
  • Conduct benchmarking across the extractives industry to identify best practice in Personnel Protection programmes and identify new initiatives to this programme
  • Develop and implement programmes to protect personnel engaged in high profile activities or high risk travel
  • Build and maintain internal relationships to implement effective process to stay abreast of company internal and engagements that may require bespoke security support
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to effectively embed and support ongoing security risk management and Crisis management programmes
  • Support the development and maintenance of appropriate governance frameworks related to security risk management and crisis management programmes
  • Support the development and delivery of 2nd line assurance activities across Group security and Crisis management programmes
  • Support 1st line enablement of assurance activities; and where required, support the delivery of 3rd line assurance activities
  • Work with key stakeholders across the business on strategic projects and improvements to group wide processes
  • Collaborate with Regional Security Business Partners and external providers to support risk-owners in Crisis response training and exercise facilitation
  • Support the maintenance and implementation of the Security & Human Rights programme, including the armed security governance framework
  • Maintain and support the implementation of the Group Travel Risk Control Framework.

What you will bring

  • A background in law enforcement, military, private security or emergency services
  • Security Industry recognised qualification or certification (CPP, PSP, CSMP) desirable
  • Significant (15+ years) international experience designing, implementing and assuring security management and/or business resilience systems
  • Experience in leading crisis management teams and extractive industry crisis response methodologies
  • Experience in designing, implementing and assuring personnel protection programmes
  • Excellent inter-personal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with Spanish being highly desirable.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and organize under tight time pressure
  • Effective influencing skills when engaging with senior leaders internally and externally
  • Ability to build strong and trusting relationships and work in a networked organization to achieve results

Where you'll be working

The role will be based in Washington, Salt Lake City or Chicago in the United States.

The role will require frequent international travel.
