Principal Visualization Engineer

Broad Institute
United States, Massachusetts, Cambridge
Mar 27, 2025

Description & Requirements

The Pattern group at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard specializes in the design and development of data visualization tools and experiences in support of scientific discovery and communication. We're looking for an experienced visualization "engineer slash designer", who combines technical expertise with a creative eye, for a principal role on the team. Along with demonstrated software and design skills, the ideal candidate will be curious, collaborative, and self-motivated, able to shepherd bespoke projects through their full lifecycle, from ideation to implementation, work with existing teams and platforms to incorporate new data visualization capabilities, and be a leading contributor to the strategic direction of the group.

As a member of the Pattern group, you will join a collection of software engineers, artists, and designers who leverage best practices in data visualization, software, and design to develop creative web-based resources that advance and communicate the innovative scientific research happening at the Broad and beyond. In addition to ensuring project requirements are synthesized and executed coherently, this principal position will involve setting the technical and design direction of the team's output, as well as working closely with leadership to cultivate new opportunities for scientific impact at the institute.

Responsibilities
  • Own software and design projects to completion, coordinating team contributions from ideation and requirements gathering to implementation and deployment, including thoughtful identification of project goals, milestones, and effort estimates.

  • Architect, write, and maintain code that enables rapid prototyping, but with an eye towards extensibility and reuse in an environment often characterized by bespoke projects and requirements.

  • Lead the technical and aesthetic direction of the group's output by identifying innovative solutions, seeking out compelling collaborations, and cultivating a design identity for our work.

  • Work closely and effectively with Pattern team members as well as external collaborators, synthesizing feedback and providing mentorship to junior colleagues.

  • Be curious and creative! Experiment with new ways of leveraging data visualization and design to support research, tell stories, and create valuable scientific impact.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in computer science, design, or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in a front-end engineering role.

  • Portfolio demonstrating contributions to data visualization projects.

  • Expertise in modern web-based graphics frameworks (D3, Three.js, Deck.gl, canvas, etc.).

  • Experience building and deploying web applications in modern Javascript frameworks (React, Vue, etc.).

  • Data analysis experience is a plus.

  • Backend deployment experience is a plus (cloud, GitHub, etc.).

  • Experience and comfort working in small teams and independently.
