Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer who will focus on the manufacture and delivery of critical components to support neutron science at ORNL. This position resides in the Manufacturing Group in the Neutron Technologies Engineering, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our team, you will play a lead role in initiating and overseeing procurement and fabrication of key equipment supporting neutron sciences. You will collaborate with on-site machine shops and subcontracted vendors to procure and produce major neutron science-related components such as reflector plugs, moderators, beam windows, mercury target modules, and other complex fabrications. The primary role of the manufacturing engineer is to manage the production of neutron source components, ensuring high quality and on-time deliveries, while also developing and optimizing the specialized manufacturing processes to produce these unique items. Additionally, you will take on broader engineering responsibilities within the Neutron Technologies Engineering Section, including analysis, process development, quality oversight, and supporting other engineering functions as required.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Act as Technical Project Officer (TPO) to oversee all technical aspects of subcontracts.

  • Cultivate and manage a network of suppliers for neutron source-related components, ensuring continuity and quality of supply.

  • Proactively manage production schedules, driving on-time delivery and addressing potential delays.

  • Lead the development and qualification of welding, machining, fabrication, and testing processes, driving continuous improvement.

  • Oversee, document, and enhance specialized processes used to manufacture neutron source components.

  • Collaborate with design engineers, quality specialists, and procurement teams to align manufacturing tasks with project needs, ensuring technical and quality specifications are met.

  • Maintain all required documentation of neutron source manufacturing components.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in mechanical engineering or a relevant engineering field with 5 or more years of relevant experience.

  • Five or more years of experience working in an engineering or manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to complete complex projects within cost and scheduleskills.

  • Competent professional knowledge in one or more of the following: metallurgy, welding, machining, coatings, and non-destructive evaluation.

  • Knowledge and experience applying the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Experience working under DOE Order 414.1D ("Quality Assurance"), ISO 9001:2015 ("Quality Management Systems"), NQA-1, or equivalent quality assurance programs.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
