Overview:

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an InstrumentHall Coordinator (IHC). As an IHC, you will provide technical support to enable neutron scattering experiments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Your core responsibility is to provide proactive support to resolve equipment and technical issues in person if possible or obtain the required technical support from a call down list to minimize schedule impacts to enable productive neutron scattering experiments.

In this role you will provide a wide variety of support to Users and Experimenters at the SNS and HFIR Facilities including facilitation of remote-access experiments. In addition, you will assist with coordination of activities conducted in the SNS Target Facility by several different SNS groups. This position requires 12 hour rotating shifts.

This position reports directly to the Instrument Hall Coordinator Supervisor and collaborates widely across the organization for example with: Users/Experimenters, Instrument Scientists and Instrument support teams, engineers, instrument installation and maintenance personnel and other support technicians, target and accelerator operations personnel, site services, and ES&H personnel.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides a wide range of support to Facility Users/experimenters as necessary to facilitate their hands-on and remote-access work.

  • Assists with basic neutron instrument operation and to diagnose issues and alarms (sample environment, choppers, detectors, etc.).

  • Responds to User problems and issues including making appropriate contacts and call-ins.

  • Performs equipment lifts using facility and instrument-specific cranes, minor shop tasks, and various troubleshooting activities.

  • Provide users and staff with updates to beam availability and any changes in run schedules.

  • Promotes safe work practices throughout the Instrument Hall.

  • Conducts facility walkthroughs, reinforces safe work practices and safe work environments.

  • Supports compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements including the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS).

  • Reports potential non-compliances and take positive actions to promote adherence to requirements.

  • Serves as primary User contact/interface during off-hours and weekends including providing.

  • Prepares shift reports and tracks neutron instrument down time at both facilities.

  • Stays abreast of ongoing and planned activities within the Target Building and coordinates with the various organizations working in the Instrument Hall to ensure concurrent activities are coordinated with regard to priorities, use of shared facility equipment, radiation protection, permitting, logistics, etc.

  • Coordinates with the IHC group leader and Area Operation Managers for general facility maintenance (e.g. building HVAC, water leaks, broken windows, lighting, painting, etc.).

  • Submit work requests for facility issues or upon staff request.

  • Coordinates with Target Operations Staff for activities which may affect Target Systems.

  • Assists in the updating and development of operating programs and procedures.

  • Assists in maintaining configuration control of radiation shielding.

  • Serves on emergency squad; understands and leads others in proper response to alarms.

  • Communicates major issues that are not resolved to the IHC group leader.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An AS degree in a scientific or technical field and five years of experience.

  • A combination of education and experience may also be considered (HS diploma and seven years of experience or BS and three years of experience).

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts and respond to emergencies.

  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software .

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in technical operations and the ability to coordinate across organizational boundaries.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform hands-on work on technical equipment and systems.

  • Experience working in or around radiological areas and experience in handling radioactive materials.

  • Radiation Worker training.

  • Work planning including hazards identification and mitigation, permits, Lock-out/Tag-out, etc.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
