Pay Range

$103,500 - $157,464 Annually

$103,500 - $131,256 Annually for the TSS.1 level

$124,200 - $157,464 Annually for the TSS.2 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. Job Description

We have an opening for an Analytic Research Specialist in the Analytic Tradecraft & Production Group within Z Program, Global Security Principal Directorate. In this role, you will contribute to enhancing the overall quality of intelligence products by identifying, researching, evaluating, and providing training on tools and databases that aid analytic tradecraft and production. You will (a) ensure access to and efficient use of existing database tools; (b) evaluate other databases and tools across the Intelligence Community (IC) for utility, access, and applicability; (c) develop and provide training and support on those selected; and (d) aid in the development and evaluation of new tools and training. In addition, you will assist in facilitating and conducting efficient research that directly supports mission deliverables.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Provide essential support to ensure access/usage of existing tools and databases. This includes providing initial training to new Field Intelligence Element (FIE) users/analysts, helping to maintain access to these tools, monitoring usage to gauge usage and effectiveness, and aiding in establishing search parameters.
  • Support mission execution and deliverable production by contributing to research (setting up one-time and persistent searches for analysts) for a specified analytic deliverable (collect and collate relevant sourcing to address key intelligence questions).
  • Provide solutions to new tools, applications, and databases that expand analytic effectiveness and best support the LLNL intelligence mission.
  • Proactively select, procure, and coordinate the implementation/installation of selected solutions with FIE Information Technology (IT) security staff and DOE management.
  • Assist in adhering to established classified marking and referencing standards; maintain appropriate security in a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the TSS.2 Level

  • Perform independent technical tasks, such as collecting, culling, and synthesizing open-source intelligence (OSINT) reporting.
  • Assist in proactively exploiting the collection cycle for OSINT, human intelligence (HUMINT), and signals intelligence (SIGINT).
  • Assist in identifying and implementing data management and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) tools that supplement tradecraft and production.
  • Assist in the application of structured analytic techniques (SATs) focused on SAT sessions to aid opportunity analysis and analysis of alternatives.
  • Identify, develop, and implement training plans and materials.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an Active DOE Q clearance (or active Top-Secret clearance) with Active Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
  • Bachelor's Degree in physical science, engineering, computer science, or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and experience, and demonstrated ability to perform independent work.
  • Fundamental knowledge to evaluate and implement computer applications, tools, and databases.
  • Experience and the ability to lead independent work effectively.
  • Sufficient organizational skills, attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills necessary to recommend and implement solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience with flexibility and ingenuity in managing changing situations requiring creativity and the ability to anticipate customer needs.
  • Ability to work across organizations to effectively interact with colleagues, mid-level internal management, and customers to resolve complex problems.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team effectively.
  • Knowledge of activities for the FIEs at national laboratories, particularly LLNL, undertaken as part of the national intelligence effort.
  • Ability to pass initial and periodic polygraph tests for specific programmatic duties.

Qualifications We Desire at the TSS.2 Level

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and provide training.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following technical computing: Matlab, TensorFlow, R, Jupiter Notebook, or Python.
  • Broad experience in evaluating and implementing advanced computer applications and databases.
  • Proficient application of technical, applied science, and/or business principles, theories, and concepts of high-quality analytic tradecraft.
  • Broad knowledge of IC Directives and DOE policies and procedures.

Security Clearance

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Please note that your current active Q or Top Secret clearance with DOE or another agency does not guarantee DOE SCI access approval; if you are denied access, you may be subject to reinvestigation of your existing Q or Top Secret Clearance.
