Department Statement |
The Office of Undergraduate Studies (
OUS) Scholars Program is the second oldest scholars
program at Colgate, established in 1967 as the "University Scholars Program."
OUS Scholars are a
highly select group of students who have not only demonstrated intellect, creativity, and
determination in the face of significant personal, economic, and social challenges, but have also
systematically sought the most demanding academic paths open to them and dedicated themselves to achieving success.
The
OUS Summer Institute (SI) is a five-week, pre-matriculation program designed to provide an
academically enriching experience as students transition to Colgate. Incoming
OUS Scholars
complete two full-credit courses and have the opportunity to build close relationships with faculty,
staff, and fellow
OUS scholars.
Colgate University is a special place to work and offers many unique opportunities, including the ability to work with and among world class faculty and staff at a highly selective residential liberal arts institution. This position provides an opportunity to become familiar with the variety of regular positions that are available at the University, as well as the ability to add employment at a distinct University to your resume.
Successful candidates for this position will earn sick leave, paid time off, free parking, and a University 'Gate Card that provides access to fitness facilities, athletic and cultural events, as well as a discount on many items at the University Bookstore.
This type of appointment is not approved to work more than 999 hours per year for all positions combined. Should incumbents work more than a total of 999 hours in a year the appointment may not continue beyond one year of service. |
Accountabilities |
The Academic Mentor (AM) will work closely with the Academic Director and Co-Director
regarding all aspects of the summer program. Broadly, the Academic Mentor will be there as an
academic resource to the incoming cohort of students, helping them to hone their critical faculties
and facilitate scholarly habits of mind. This will include, among other responsibilities, continuing to
cultivate students' analytic and creative writing skills; planning workshops that allow students to
understand the philosophical foundations of the liberal arts; introduce students to the larger
Hamilton community/area; and offer study sessions throughout the summer.
In addition, the Academic Mentor will live in the dormitory with the students and oversee the
undergraduate Summer Institute Community Facilitators (CFs). This group of current Colgate
undergraduate students will also live in the dorm and the AM will coordinate all working hours and
programming put on by the CFs within the living/learning environment. In addition, the CFs will be
working on their own research projects over the summer that the AM will help oversee and
coordinate.
The AM will receive direct mentorship and training from the Co-Directors of the program in the
week leading up to the beginning of the SI.
