The ELDT Trainer will work within a team environment to conduct training to prepare students to take their Commercial Driver's License test. Utilize educational materials such as handouts, workbooks, slides, and videos. Work with other Knife River locations to optimize and standardize ELDT programs. May be required to design and/or deliver other courses as needed, including delivering the Top Drum or Top Wheel new driver training. Training classes will primarily take place at the Knife River Training Center near Albany, OR. CDL classes are typically scheduled Monday through Saturday.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Must have a current CDL - Unrestricted Class A license and a minimum of two years Class A driving experience.
  • Must have experience in delivering truck driver training and other training for the construction industry.
  • Must have familiarity with OSHA and FMCSA safety regulations.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers including:


    • Windows, Word, Excel & PowerPoint software.
    • iPad Tablet.


  • Must have familiarity with adult education theory and curriculum design normally obtained through a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • May require some travel, up to 25%.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Tanker and HazMat endorsement preferred or willing to obtain these endorsements.
  • Experience with Knife River's Top Wheel or Top Drum driver training programs or other experiences in advanced truck driver training.
  • Experience with Cat equipment training.
  • Experience in delivering leadership development training classes.
  • Experience with multiple multi-media platforms for training delivery.


Duties and/or Responsibilities:



  • Provide theory and behind the wheel training to prepare students to take the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam.
  • Ensure all aspects of the ELDT training program are in line with OSHA, FMCSA, and Knife River safety standards.
  • Continue to enhance the ELDT curriculum to best prepare students for passing the behind-the-wheel portion of the CDL exam and a successful career as a professional truck driver.
  • Provide construction specific training for new CDL drivers (Top Wheel or Top Drum).
  • Maintain training facilities so they are conducive to effective learning.
  • Maintain equipment used in the ELDT training.
  • Maintain documentation of training attendance in accordance with FMCSA requirements.
  • Document truck hours and enforce daily inspection documentation as required by the State of Oregon, DOT, & FMCSA.
  • Stay informed of requirements defined by the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA) for the Entry Level Driver's Training (ELDT) program.
  • Stay informed of any state specific requirements for a CDL driver.
  • Work with the training center staff to coordinate facility maintenance.
  • Assist training center staff to support events hosted at the center.
  • Assist Lead instructor in transportation of equipment when necessary.
  • Assist local Knife River operations with material deliveries when time allows.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • General knowledge of the process steps in a construction and construction materials environment.
  • Detailed knowledge of the FMCSA and state requirements for obtaining a CDL license.
  • General understanding of the equipment used in the trucking and construction materials industry.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with internal and external customers and partners.
  • Must be competent in stand-up delivery including co-training/co-facilitating.
  • Need a positive attitude and the ability to work well with others.
  • Must have good organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
