Mechanical Group Lead

Job Purpose:

With the manager's guidance, the Manufacturing Team Lead provides day-today guidance and support to a group of Manufacturing Assemblers/Testers/Operators. He/she takes responsibility for the coordination of activities within the assigned area and ensures a smooth flow of production to meet schedules, ensuring effective use of people and equipment. The Manufacturing Team Lead participates in the group's work by coordinating and advising others and/or by helping out where needed to ensure the achievement of expected productivity goals.

Nature of Duties:



  • Works with manager to assess performance. Works with employees to plan and monitor individual performance of unit members.
  • Responsible for providing timely and useful feedback to staff members on their performance and development plan.
  • Receives guidance in handling sensitive employee situations, such as performance issues, absenteeism, etc.
  • Takes accountability for the behavior and performance of the assigned group and/or shift, and provides on-the-job training and mentoring to other team members.
  • Identifies material shortages and initiates corrective action in relation to production.
  • Ensures all safety and operating procedures are followed at all times.
  • Completes regular reporting and data management updates.
  • Attends regular production meetings to represent interests and concerns of assigned area.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures.
  • Ensures proper record keeping of diagrams and assembly aids.
  • Provides standardized group performance reports relating to the yield or quality of production, contributing information and insight into the Key Performance Indicators.
  • Takes a leadership role in facilitating operator ownership throughout the facility for various initiatives.
  • Provides input into hiring decisions and performance management.
  • Monitors and coordinate daily priorities with a view to maximizing resource allocation and product deliveries.
  • Supports daily production meetings.
  • Assist/oversees completion of shift report and verifies completion and accuracy of shift audit checklist.
  • Supports material & documentation primes as required.
  • Proactively monitors WIP to achieve FIFO, minimize holds and maintain 100% inventory accuracy.
  • Works with operators to ensure a continuous reduction in scrap and rework through proper handling of product and following established documented workmanship methods and best business.


Education and Experience Requirements:



  • Generally requires 4-6 years of factory experience in a technical manufacturing environment, especially one that is related to box build assemblies.


Experience in building Inverters an asset.

Minimum skills/knowledge (skills and abilities necessary for position):



  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English needed to escalate issues to managers, engineering and other departments.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrated capability in all aspects of the area.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply process documents.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel to record data.
  • Ability to use various equipment and tools and troubleshoot difficulties or escalate when required.
  • Solid time management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to use torque hand tools.
  • Must be able to communicate in both written and spoken English



Minimum Education:



  • Generally prefer 26 week college course in Electronics Assembly.


Minimum Physical Requirements:



  • Demands: prolonged sitting, visual acuity, manual dexterity, lifting and carrying, attention to detail, good hand/eye coordination.
  • Equipment/materials: computer, electronic splicing equipment, optical/microelectronics testing equipment.
  • Hazards: working with chemicals, optical fiber, laser safety, UV.
