Purpose of Position |
Reporting to the Assistant Director for Programs, the Fitness Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of Fitness programming in Campus Recreation to include: Group Fitness, Personal Training, Fitness Equipment, and supervision of the Fitness staff.
This position is vital to the mission of the department to promote healthy behaviors, the mission of Student Affairs to develop students through services and programs, and the university's vision of dedication to developing the well-being of its people. |
Primary Responsibilities |
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate a Fitness staff of 25 + including instructors, fitness assistants, and Personal Trainers.
- Conduct 2 in-service trainings a semester for all staff.
- Complete payroll procedures accurately for all student and contract employees following university and departmental guidelines.
- Create, encourage, and support professional development opportunities for staff, including training programs, professional association involvement, research, conference, and individual mentoring.
- Plan and conduct Group Fitness instructor training and development program (GFIT) each semester.
- Plan, administer and promote a Fall & Spring Fitness class schedule of 24 + classes per week (pending facility availability) that includes a variety of classes for individuals of all fitness levels. Program for 5-10 classes per week during the summer and holiday breaks. Program offerings should include cardio and mind-body classes.
- Provide onsite supervision of programs. Interact daily with staff and participants.
- Collect and review Personal Training client information. Assign clients to trainers as needed.
- Conduct personal training sessions if necessary.
- Track client/trainer sessions. Review program charts and keep financial records for sessions.
- Meet or exceed annual revenue targets for the Personal Training Program.
- Ensure that scheduled classes are offered. Communicate with instructors regarding substitutions. Teach/cover any open classes/shifts if necessary.
- Responsible for monitoring program budgets, operating expenses, and revenues.
- Purchase necessary equipment and supplies for programs. Operate programs within established budget totals for expenses and revenues.
- Responsible for regular maintenance, inspection, and upkeep of Fitness equipment in studios.
- Create and update policies and procedures related to the Fitness programs.
- Track and record participation numbers for all programs/areas. Manage participant waiver system.
- Conduct program assessment surveys each year. Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Marketing to create surveys for specific programs/events.
- Create and implement participant incentive programs each semester.
- Coordinate semester facility use with Associate Director for Facilities.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Marketing to develop and implement a yearly marketing plan for the fitness programs, including website management, flyers/posters, social media posts, and event announcements.
- Develop and follow a yearly calendar/schedule for all Fitness activities and deadlines.
- Create and implement a preventative maintenance plan for all strength & conditioning equipment.
- Coordinate equipment repairs with equipment companies. Purchase and maintain inventory of repair parts for equipment.
- Perform basic maintenance and repairs to cardio and strength equipment.
- Research the purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Seek out opportunities to expand departmental revenues.
- Supervise, train, develop, motivate, and evaluate a Fitness Graduate Assistant to assist the Fitness & Personal Training programs.
- Establish, monitor, and assess individual and unit SMART goals.
- Assist GA with daily operations of the Fitness and Personal Training programs, including staff development and training programs, creating program schedules and staffing schedules, staff evaluations, etc.
- Conduct individual meetings with the Fitness GA at least every two weeks to discuss programs and departmental issues.

Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Student Personnel or related degree required.
- American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification preferred.
- Minimum 2 years experience working in university recreation.
- Minimum 1 year experience supervising student employees.
- Certification required as Health/Fitness Instructor and Personal Training through ACSM, ACE, AFFA, NSCA, NETA.
- Yoga and/or pilates certifications preferred (or willingness to obtain within one year).
- Indoor Cycling certifications preferred (or willing to obtain within one year).
ZUMBA certifications preferred (or willingness to obtain within one year).- Nutrition certification preferred (or willingness to obtain within one year).
