In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizingfocus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise ininterdisciplinary research centers across the university.

The College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a Fabrication Instructor for 2nd shift (2:30pm to 11pm Monday through Thursday, 3pm-9pm Friday). The ideal candidate will support and maintain prototyping facilities that are a focal point for education and research activities within the college and across the university. You will join a team of six full time professional staff and numerous student workers, to train hundreds of student, faculty and staff users per year in 3D printing, laser cutting, electronics, wood working, and metal machining. In addition to skills training, personnel teach design- building skills by helping students convert an idea into a physical prototype that is testable by the intended user and designed for manufacture. During the academic year, the facilities have extensive open hours, including evenings and weekends, to support student projects for courses, clubs, entrepreneurial, and extracurricular activities. During open hours, personnel actively work with students to ensure safe operation of equipment, provide additional skills instruction, and advise on component design and construction. These activities include helping students work through issues such as part geometry, selection of materials, tolerances, and more. Prototyping is supported through the integration of a computer cluster, traditional machine shop, woodshop, and rapid fabrication lab that are located adjacent to each other, and staff frequently support student activities across all areas.

Core responsibilities:

  • Assisting student fabrication facilitiesin the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Both formally and informally teach, mentor, and supervise students in the safe and effective use of
    prototyping equipment including but not limited to: 3D printing, laser cutting, hand tools, power tools, woodworking. In addition, electronics prototyping desirable but not required.
  • Deliver training programs and programmatic activities in the areas of fabrication tools and equipment
  • Monitor student open hours to ensure safe operation of equipment, to provide additional skills instruction, and to advise on component design and construction.
  • Workweek is Monday through Thursday 2:30pm to 11pm and Friday 3pm to 9pm.
  • Help students fabricate their own apparatus for course and extracurricular projects.
  • Provide design and prototyping advice to students, faculty, and staff engaged in academic, club,
    entrepreneurial, and extracurricular design-build projects.
  • Fabricate parts, assemblies, and experimental equipment to support campus research activities
  • Contribute to the management, maintenance, and operation of student shops to ensure a safe and
    efficient work environment.
  • Safely perform multiple duties, switching tasks as necessary to meet demand.
  • Have a passion to work closely with a diverse student body; and
  • Working with youth, students, faculty, and staff in outreach activities

Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of relevant full-time experience working in a professional fabrication facility
  • Ability to cover 2nd shift (2:30pm to 11pm Monday through Thursday, 3pm-9pm Friday).
  • Expertise in the use of various prototyping equipment. Proficiency including but not limited to: 3D printers, laser cutters, hand tools, power tools, wood working.
  • Experience using CAD (Solidworks) and familiarity with CAM (Vcarve) software, and 3D modeling.
  • Experience in designing components for fabrication and/or manufacturing
  • Ability to safely prioritize work and to multitask duties when several are necessary simultaneously
  • A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A technical certificate, two-year degree, or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Supervisory experience in a professional fabrication facility
  • Experience teaching and working with students in both formal and informal settings to train them to safely and effectively use of rapid prototyping equipment and machine tools including, but not limited to: 3D printers, laser cutters, hand tools, power tools, manual milling machines, CNC milling machines, welding, wood working, water-jet cutting, basic plastic and metal casting, programming, and basic electronics.
  • Experience working in a college/university environment
  • Experience teaching design for fabrication and/or manufacture
  • Ability to read and create mechanical drawings and 3D CAD models based on verbal or written instructions
  • Experience in the fabrication of research apparatus based on verbal and/or written instructions
  • Proficient in modern computing skills such as, task organization, scheduling and billing, and data collection and sorting.
