Position Summary

The Department of Genetics and Development is looking to hire Technician B to work in the laboratory of Dr. Rodney Rothstein. Research in the Rothstein lab is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of genetic recombination, especially as it relates to mitotic crossing over leading to loss of heterozygosity (LOH). We use yeast as a model system and do image analysis of cells after they have undergone recombination. The project is under direct supervision of the lead investigator on the project. The candidate will be technical support staff for the Principal Investigator and other lab investigators, as needed.

Responsibilities

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare samples for microscopic analysis from cells induced to undergo genetic recombination.
  • Acquire images using a fluorescent microscope.
  • Process acquired images using computer programs to measure physical distance between various marked chromosomal sites in the nucleus.
  • Compile data to determine the type of recombination event occurring in yeast cells.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science is required; educational emphasis on cell biology or genetics is preferred.
  • Experience with image analysis is essential.
  • Previous experience working in a research lab environment using light microscopy preferred. Laboratory course work only does not apply.
  • The ability to work independently, under minimal supervision, following appropriate training.
  • Computer literacy: experience in computational biology, proficiency with common laboratory software, other graphical and data analysis software.
  • Excellent motivation, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
