Responsibilities

NASA's Sounding Rocket Operations Contract (NSROC) is a sub-orbital space flight program located at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), a part of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). NSROC provides suborbital launch vehicles, payload development and field operations support to NASA's Science Mission Directorate. The program enables the collection of Earth, Heliophysics and Astrophysics science.

The Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) Manager leads the GNC Group on NASA's Sounding Rocket Operations Contract (NSROC). They ensure the GNC group provides designs, analysis and product that meet or exceed the programmatic requirements levied.

Responsibilities the position:

    Manage the GNC staff comprised of exempt engineering and non-exempt technician staff. This includes mission and project assignments.
  • Direct, review and critique staff work for completeness, accuracy and adherence to program policies and standards.
  • Serve as a mentor for the GNC staff.
  • Review and approve GNC procedures and work instructions.
  • Prepare technical reports for management to document project status.
  • Coordinate with external production groups on GNC fabrication activities.
  • Manage production of GNC sensors, GSE (Ground Support Equipment) and harnessing, built by GNC technician staff.
  • Manage GSE calibration, field deployments and new developments.
  • Manage GNC hardware within the stock system, including the introduction of new parts and material/service purchase requests.
  • Coordinate with material vendors on procurements and technical issues.
  • Manage subcontract vendors of GNC systems or services.
  • Provide management with cost effective and innovative solutions to issues.
  • Manage the technical aspects of individual GNC projects, including research and development activities.
  • Present to program management and NASA on major development activities and issues.
  • Manage the GNC financial budget.
  • Verify that appropriate QMS processes, procedures and work instructions are being used/followed within the group, including software assurance.
  • Review/authorize engineering change requests and disposition non-conformances.

Training or certification in the following will be required:

  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control
  • High Pressure Systems, including operator and related physical
  • Oxygen Deficiency
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software Assurance


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science related field
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in an engineering or science related field
  • Experience with Electrical and Mechanical CAD programs.
  • Software development, analysis, and simulation experience including Matlab.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is preferred
  • 2 or years of supervisory experience
  • Experience in attitude control systems or sensors, directly related to sounding rockets, missiles, targets, or spacecraft.

Target Salary Range

$112,000 - $179,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
