Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient service. The Mechanical Department is in charge of all rolling stock, which includes 150 locomotives, 845 coach cars, 186 highliners, and 530+ fleet vehicles. The Mechanical Department ensures that rolling stock operates safely, effectively, and efficiently throughout the Metra System. Mechanical Department performs all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) inspection, including daily, quarterly, semiannual, annual, Tri-annual, quad, etc., and provides daily cleaning services of all rolling stock. In addition, the Department purchases new equipment, rehabilitates, perform modification, maintenance, and wreck repairs, to all rolling stock to help improve state of good repair and on-time performance. The Laborer will clean equipment, engines, shops and yards; assist in the movement of equipment, supplies and materials, using transfer and/or turntables. Fuel and water locomotives. Clean shop facilities inside and outside in compliance with safety rules and operating procedures. Clean interior and exterior of rolling stock equipment in compliance with safety rules and operating procedures. Sand locomotives and rail cars. Deliver supplies and materials, frequently with the use of fork lift equipment. Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
