Job Summary

8 Long is a fast-pace 35-bed medical-surgical Neuroscience unit who service adult acute care patients. 10 of the 35 bed are equiped to care for hardwired continuous epilepsy monitoring patient, including patients with intracranial grid placement. UCSF Neurology and Neurosurgery rank #2 in the nation and best in California by the US News World Report 2023-2024 and is a comprehensive stroke center.

The incumbent will oversee around 80 FTEs with a $15 million operational budget supporting over 5 neuroscience service lines. Strong hospital management/leadership, fiscal and operations management skill in a complex academic medical center is essential in this role.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253,900 - $269,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Neurology / Neurosurgery unit is a state-of-the-art medical-surgical Neuroscience unit that excels in offering exciting interventions for rapidly growing services including neurology, neurosurgery and neuro interventional radiology.
As a Joint commission comprehensive stroke center, current and progressive stroke treatment options are available to patients. Five beds are dedicated to the Northern California Epilepsy Program where patients with uncontrolled seizures are monitored to determine of the best treatment options.
With a collaborative team approach, the nurses on this unit provide specialized care to the unique neuroscience patient population. Through this unit's councils, shared decision making has empowered nurse driven initiatives surrounding quality & safety in patient care, professional development of staff and patient education & satisfaction. Abundant disease specific education is offered to nurses throughout the year by a variety of members of the interdisciplinary team.
The exposure to the diverse patient populations and varied levels of complexity in care provides nurses the ability to developing and hone keen assessment skills. The unit is fast paced and highly rewarding with many hands on learning opportunities available on a daily basis.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated hospital management/leadership skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS by American Heart Association
  • Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events and ability to solve problems with critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments
  • Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred
  • ANCC RN specialty certification in Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive-Advanced
  • Experience in Step-Down or Critical Care

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS by American Heart Association
