Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
The Sustainability Director will be a key member of the Facilities Department focused specifically on supporting the development and implementation of strategies and goals around A&T's Sustainability program. This role will lead and have primary responsibility for engaging campus stakeholders. This role will have responsibility for synthesizing
ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) information from across the organization to be indexed within
ESG frameworks and into NC A&T's Sustainability Report. Additionally, this position will manage A&T's Sustainability Master Plan and implement new processes. The other core action being the design, implementation, and sustainment of NC A&T's Sustainability program.
- Work with leadership to establish and maintain the Campus Sustainability Plan.
- In collaboration with the Executive leadership, develop ESG goals and initiatives, tailoring for our stakeholder audiences.
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to determine and prioritize the university's near-term and long-range Sustainability objectives to coordinate cross functional actions into an overall Sustainability strategic plan; including the facilitation of periodic ESG "materiality" assessments and change management within the organization.
- Monitor and analyze established sustainability metrics and prepare briefings for internal stakeholders, leadership, and the board of trustees.
- Lead, manage, and collaborate on Sustainability project of all size & scope end-to-end (i.e., developing project milestones, gathering business requirements and functional specs, developing budgets, delivering guidelines and requirements, refining scope to meet deadlines, tracking dependencies, and facilitating change management).
- Work with leadership to establish and monitor ESG target goals (e.g., SBTi and Net Zero), initiatives, and KPIs. SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative) a global organization that helps businesses and financial institutions set science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Ensure Sustainability initiatives are progressing in accordance with Sustainability Strategy and Targets by maintaining the Sustainability roadmap and project plan, driving accountability for achievement of goals and metrics.
- Coordinate the sourcing, collection, and validation of ESG data and content for reporting and responses to stakeholder queries. Supporting the preparedness for and execution of both internal and external assurance for reporting.
- Trains Specialists, Coordinators, and Senior Coordinators on all processes and systems used for Sustainability and Environmental Management System within the organization.
- Lead the establishment, implementation, and sustainment of Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required.
- Develop and implement comprehensive sustainability programs aligned with the university's strategic goals and objectives.
- Collaborate with internal departments, including Operations, Design & Construction, and Finance, to integrate sustainability practices into business processes.
- Manage third party sustainability reporting, including data collection, analysis, and preparation of reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in sustainability to inform program development and implementation.
- Develop and deliver training and educational programs to promote sustainability awareness and engagement among employees.
- Represent A&T at industry conferences, workshops, and other events to share best practices and learn from peers.
- Prepare and present sustainability performance updates to senior leadership and other key stakeholders.
- Foster relationships with external partners, including NGOs, government agencies, and industry groups, to support sustainability initiatives.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Sustainability & Energy Services (
SES) Office was created by the Facilities department in an effort to comply with Governor Roy Cooper's Executive Order 80 which calls for a 40% statewide reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and Executive Order 246 which calls for a 50% statewide reduction by 2030. The
SES is also focused on helping to develop a systematic and integrated approach to the implementation of energy conservation measures campus wide and ensure that the university's continuous energy reduction goals are met. Sustainability at NC A&T implies that our critical activities are (at a minimum) ecologically sound, socially just, and economically viable, and that they will continue to be so for future generations. NC A&T will function as a sustainable community, embodying responsible consumption of food and energy, treating its diverse members with respect and supporting these values in our surrounding community. |
Minimum Requirements |
Bachelor's Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education |
Advanced degree in an appropriate field (e.g., MA, MS, MD, PhD, JD) preferred.
Five to ten years of progressive experience and leadership in the area of sustainability, resource management and/or related initiatives.
Specific experience in the areas of sustainability policies, sustainable food systems, healthy living programs, conservation, energy, waste and/or water management is preferred.
Experience within a University setting is preferred. |
