Research Associate, Center on Global Democracy
The Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy at Cornell University seeks applicants for a Research Associate to work in the Center on Global Democracy under Professor and Director Rachel Beatty Riedl. The Center on Global Democracy tackles the fundamental questions facing democracies, serving as a hub for research and learning to strengthen democratic institutions. Through targeted research and public engagement, we aim to reverse democratic declines and bolster democracy worldwide. Position Overview:
The ideal candidate will be a proactive, organized, and versatile individual who can seamlessly blend administrative duties with active research responsibilities and outreach and education. This role is integral to the smooth operation and continued success of our Center, requiring a unique combination of skills in research administration, public engagement, teaching, quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
Administrative Duties (30%)
* Oversee day-to-day administrative operations of the Center
*Manage and coordinate grant applications, renewals, and reporting.
*Organize, communicate with, and help supervise student interns/fellows. *Coordinate the Non-Resident Fellow call and selection process.
Research Involvement (30%)
*Actively participate in ongoing research projects, including as author, co-PI, co-author on scholarly publications.
* Manage projects through data gathering, analysis, writing, and presentations/dissemination.
*Coordinate with CGD affiliates and non-resident fellows to design and conduct research projects.
*Assist in data analysis and interpretation. *Write grants and lead on grant implementation and reporting
Outreach and Education (25%)
*Lead agenda and logistical coordination for Democracy Fellows Program (UG & Grad), including Managing RA mentorship and Project assignment (of UG, Grad, post-docs, Non-resident Fellows, etc) and creating agendas and coordinating the biweekly meetings for each Fellows program, and provide support for special projects led by Fellows (conferences, speakers, etc).
*Develop Curriculum and University Outreach of Educational Materials for Democracy & Civic Engagement.
*Prepare e-modules, partner with external entities to provide certificates and other course materials, with an emphasis on community engagement for democratic participation, civics, and rights. *Teach one Brooks course per year
Public Engagement (15%)
*Coordinate press coverage and serve as a spokesperson for public statements.
* Coordinate partnerships with NGOs and other partner organizations. *Deliver lectures and presentations on behalf of the Center.
*Engage with the public and media to promote the Center's work and findings.
*Draft policy briefs/ summaries of the research and activities for the CGD website, newsletter, and other reporting.
*Assist with public event conceptualization and planning, including organizing webinars and curating conversations for public audiences
* Contribute to the writing of polished reports and articles. Title Overview: Research Associates contribute, in collaboration with a principal investigator or faculty sponsor, to the design and implementation of research projects or programs. Research associates can be principal investigators on grants or contracts only on an exception basis. Their specific duties may include, but are not limited to, planning, conducting, and reporting original research; designing, constructing, or operating highly complex research apparatus; and supervising the research operations of a laboratory or facility. Research associates informally participate in graduate research training, but they may not be members of graduate committees, except as ad hoc additional, supplementary members. Research associates normally have no responsibilities for formal teaching but may participate in seminars or specialized portions of courses to an extent consistent with the terms of the funding of the position. Required Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in a relevant field.
*Proven experience in Center management or a similar administrative role.
* Strong background in scientific research with active involvement in projects. * Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities. *Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
*Proficiency in programming languages (esp. Python) and mathematical modeling.
* Ability to engage with a diverse audience, including the public, media, and academic peers. Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in grant writing and management.
*Prior experience in public speaking and delivering lectures.
*Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a collaborative team environment.
*Demonstrated ability to handle complex administrative tasks efficiently.
