Department Background:

Position Summary:

The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) is composed of five sections: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil & Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty and senior academics, 200+ graduate students, and 500+ other employees located in of facilities in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across the New York State. The school offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in Plant Science and offers graduate studies in five distinct fields. The school is home to the Agricultural Sciences major and school faculty contribute to the Biology, International Agriculture and Rural Development, and Viticulture and Enology majors. Annually the school has ~$32M in sponsored research expenditures and ~$60M total expenditures.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Finance and Budget (ADFB) and working in conjunction with the School of Integrative Plant Science Finance Team and with the University Shared Service Center (SSC), provide high level financial and accounting support to SIPS units located in Ithaca. As a provider of financial services to SIPS, make appropriate judgments about financial activities in a manner that coincides with university policies as they relate to account management, grant and contract management, sponsored project accountability, college reporting, and accountability for funds management. Work directly with the Senior Financial Reporting Specialist (SFRS) to provide regular account updates to be used in reporting and personnel planning for Project Investigators (PIs). Establish close working relationships with SIPS administrative leadership team, faculty, and staff. Establish and maintain close working relationships with the University SSC. Work within a collaborative team environment to provide the most efficient and streamlined processes for SIPS and the college. Obtain sponsored programs certificate training and stay updated on changes in University policies and procedures as they relate to financial processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Accounting experience and/or formal coursework in accounting applications is required. Must be able to understand and accurately apply account numbers, object codes, rules, and policies to transactions and understand impact on financial statements.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills are critical.
  • Must use judgement in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive nature while successfully balancing conflicting priorities and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Must be able to compile, analyze, and report on complex financial data.
  • Must have previous experience in research administration post-award financial management.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad range of people. Attention to detail, organizational skills and prioritization skills are required.
  • Able to work quickly & effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.
  • Demonstrates accountability in all work responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a high-level of proficiency with Excel, and experience with other standard office programs.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.
  • Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on questionable situations.
  • Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.
  • Must be able and willing to enhance personal knowledge, skills, and abilities as needed.
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years concentrated experience in a financial office setting.
  • Expertise in Excel, KFS, Workday and OBIEE dashboards.
  • Familiarity with Cornell University or other higher education environment.
