Overview The Agency of Transportation (AOT) Traffic Operations team is seeking a Technician to serve as a Regional Traffic Investigator. As part of the Traffic Investigations Unit, you'll play a key role in evaluating existing traffic control devices (primarily signs and pavement markings), recommending new installations, reviewing project plans and work zones, and conducting engineering studies on behalf of the Traffic Operations Engineer for the Traffic Committee. Preferred Qualifications: Strong verbal and written communication skills Familiarity with: MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; AASHTO publications; VTrans Standards, Specifications, and Policies Experience with pavement marking and/or sign layout and installation Ability to read, understand, and review construction plans Excellent organizational skills, including managing multiple tasks and priorities Professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with the public, particularly regarding sensitive traffic and safety issues The Traffic Operations Unit currently supports a hybrid working environment, with requests for an approved telework schedule considered. Environmental Factors Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Attendance at public meetings as an agency representative may be required. Some public speaking may be needed. May encounter hostile attitudes on the part of contractors, property owners, and the general public. Incumbents should possess private means of transportation. Out of state travel may be required. Overtime needs are predictable. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering technology, environmental technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, construction management, or related technical field AND four (4) years of experience performing engineering support tasks involved in one or more of the following: planning, surveying, design, inspection, construction, research and statistics, testing, investigation, maintenance or construction of various types of civil engineering projects. OR Associate degree in civil engineering, environmental technology, engineering technology, surveying, construction technology, architecture, or related field AND six (6) years of experience as described above. OR High School diploma or equivalent AND eight (8) years of experience as described above. OR Two (2) years or more of experience as an AOT Technician IV with the State of Vermont. Special Requirements Some positions in this job class may require possession of a valid driver's license.
