Position Overview
The University of Kansas Edwards Campus and American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Department invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for a regular lecturer position. Lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester for development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction, with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the course(s).

The lecturer position will teach for the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies BA/BGS program at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. The courses for this program will be taught exclusively at the Edwards Campus or Online, and may run on a standard or non-standard course schedule.

Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses consistent with departmental instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, we cannot currently offer employment to candidates residing in the following states: California and Delaware. Job Description
100% - Regular Lecturer Duties:
Teach and/or develop a specified number of undergraduate/graduate courses per semester for the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program.
  • Common examples of courses for which lecturers would be needed: ASLD 311 Introduction to Deaf Studies, ASLD 312 Intersectionality and Deaf Communities, ASLD 313 Social Justice and Allyship with Deaf Communities, ASLD 414 Historical Foundations of Deaf Education
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required.
  • Be available for reasonable scheduling of appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Adhere to all Departmental, College and University policies.
  • Lecturers may work with Program Director to determine format and schedule for course(s).

Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV, and (3) information provided from three professional references:
  1. A master's degree from a nationally accredited university in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies or closely related field, is required by the start date of the appointment.
  2. At least two years' experience teaching Deaf Studies courses in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience using Canvas LMS
