EHS - Environmental Engineer

AESC is looking to add an Environmental, Health and Safety Engineer to our team in Florence, SC.

AESC's Tennessee gigafactory in Smyrna, which has been operational since 2012, produces batteries for Nissan. The Kentucky gigafactory in Bowling Green will supply Mercedes-Benz with high-performance battery cell modules. The South Carolina gigafactory in Florence will supply technology-leading battery cells for new electric models produced in BMW Group's Spartanburg plant. The Environmental Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing procedures, guidelines and recommending equipment to promote and ensure environmental compliance. This position will be expected to support training across the organization to enhance EHS knowledge at all levels. The creation and management of a job safety assessment program across all functions and equipment will be paramount in enhancing our equipment and process for all team members.

• Supports Development, Implementation, and Execution of safety and environmental policies, requirements, and programs.
• Maintain Compliance Records.
• Reviews documents to verify compliance with Safety and Environmental Policies and requirements.
• Assists in maintaining Hazard Tracking System data.
• Supports System Safety and Environmental Risk Identification and Management Processes.
• Evaluates Environmental documentation, system design, and baseline changes.
• Reviews Program-level system safety assessment reports for completeness, technical accuracy and assessment of safety risk.
• Reviews verification evidence and provides assessment of whether safety specifications, hazard mitigations, and requirements are met.
• Conducts Program Reviews and Meetings.
• Attends and supports system-level design reviews and assessing changes throughout the life cycle of the Programs/Project.
• Supports design and test reviews, change and failure review boards, and technical interchange meetings to identify and characterize risks.
• Supports milestone reviews including Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), Test Readiness Reviews (TRR).
• Assists in the tracking and closure of EHS action items assigned during program reviews/meetings.
• Conducts Safety and Environmental Audits and reports deficiencies identified in the audits related to implementation of and compliance with safety and environmental policies.
• Performs safety and environmental audit follow-ups, tracks findings, and verify closure within the guidelines identified.
• Participates in the development and review of environmental risk assessments and other safety analysis and assists in obtaining approval from the appropriate authority.
• Develops work instructions related to EHS.
• Supports Safe Conduct System Demonstration Activities.
• Evaluates mission specific safety risks, particularly for interaction of the test event with other systems.
• Assesses test architecture for safety concerns and reviewing test plans and procedures for safety concerns.
• Supports development of Final Hazard Classification (FHC) detailed plans.
• Participates in pre-test reviews, such as Test Planning Reviews (TPRs).
• Participates in daily status briefings.
• Participates in Failure Reviews and Mishap Investigations.
• Develops and publishes Hazard Classification Documentation.
• Completes Department of Transportation documentation in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• As necessary, performs other related duties of which the above are representative.
• Performs all other related assignments (including special projects) as required in a professional and cooperative manner.

Occasional domestic and international travel required.

What You Need

* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Services, Biology, Chemistry, or related field is required.

* Minimum of three years of related experience at a professional level is required.

* Must be a self-motivated individual with good written and verbal communication skills and Data Driven Decision-Making skills.

* Ability to identify unsafe situations to persons or the environment or potentially unsafe situations.

* Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering and health and safety laws.

* Strong knowledge of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and EPA regulations.

* Independent, driven, eager to learn, has strong time management skills, and the ability to manage simultaneous and often changing priorities.

* Works well in a highly collaborative fast-paced environment with cross-functional teams.

* Knowledge of PSM (Process Safety) and RMP (Risk Management) processes.

* Effective Problem Solving/Root Cause Analysis

* Working knowledge of Statistics and related Improvement Processes

* Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

* Proficiency with conferencing systems (Microsoft Teams).

* Understands or ability to understand and follows all standards of IATF16949 and VDA 6.3 quality standards. (training and awareness will be provided for those who are not familiar with these standards)

* Understands and or ability to understand follows all standards of ISO14001 environmental standards. (training and awareness will be provided for those who are not familiar with these standards)

* Knowledge of Tier 2, RCRA, SWPPP, SPCC, EPCRA, and SARA 313 compliance.

What is "Nice to Have"?

* Certified Hazardous Material Manager status preferred.

* Experience in a high-volume manufacturing facility preferred.

* Previous EHS experience in a battery manufacturing facility is highly preferred.

* Automotive OEM or Tier 1 Supplier experience is a plus.

* New model experience and equipment design, installation, and commissioning a plus.

* New plant design, build, and commissioning is a plus.

* Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and RC14001/RCMS a plus
