Job Summary

The Safford Lab is in need of a contract staff to work (1) as a field technician for four months under a UCOP-funded project to build 3-D models of forest fuels to support the development of a prescribed fire planning tool which will improve prescribed fire implementation to increase forest resilience to climate-driven phenomena like wildfire and drought. Work will primarily focus on field sampling of vegetation structure and destructive sampling of biomass, plus some use of terrestrial LiDAR scanning; and (2) to transition in October 2025 to a "research field coordinator and analyst" under a project funded by the Cal Air Resources Board to develop better allometric equations to permit quantification of shrub biomass and carbon. The project is in support of the California Carbon Cap and Trade program. This position will train, lead, and indirectly supervise a field crew for most of the calendar year, participate in some field work, and lead laboratory-based sample preparation, data compilation, and data analysis. Both of these projects fit well within DESP's strongly applied focus on resolution of key environmental problems tied to resource use and climate change. The timeline of this appointment needed is at minimum 1 year to start.
