Overview
The Diagnostic Assistant supports and assists the associates of the MRI Department by providing quality service to physicians and customers. This includes receiving customers, ordering outpatient exams, acquiring patient medication lists, coordination of patient exams, providing patient escort assistance, answering phones and coordination of calls, radiology image maintenance, reproduction and distribution of radiology images and reports, and a reference for exam ordering and exam prep information for referring physician offices as well as the units of the hospital. The Diagnostic Assistant is expected to understand and support the Mission and Vision of UnityPoint Health. Responsibilities
Main Function
- Orders radiology exams appropriately with attention to detail and assuring all necessary information is appropriate and available.
- Acquires medication lists when appropriate and assists customers with documentation of information.
- Escorts patients as requested.
- Greets all customers, including patients, physicians, other hospital personnel, and physician office staff with a pleasant and professional manner and appearance.
- Maintains confidentiality when dealing with data related to patients, physicians, and coworkers.
- Consistently uses excellent telephone manners and rapport in communicating with all persons in the scope of work duties. This includes telephone, intercom and direct communication as well as all forms of communication devices available in the Imaging Services Department.
- Schedules patient procedures according to written protocols.
- Provides documentation that is neat, legible and consistent.
- Provides assistance with exam ordering, information and preparations.
- Acquires appropriate consent for release of information for patient images and reports.
- Reproduces and distributes radiology images as requested with electronic documentation of image location.
- Maintains images as directed by the Iowa Department of Public Health guidelines and Jones Regional Medical Center Policy.
- Retrieves images in electronic or film format as requested.
- Provides daily schedules for the Imaging Services Department.
- Is able to prioritize work appropriately and assists others as time and workload allows.
- Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs used in Imaging Services.
- Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following department protocols.
Main Function
- Attends department meetings, inservices, on the job training and continuing education programs to meet development needs.
- Understands and adheres to all safety practices while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to biohazardous material.
- Promotes the development, preparation, implementation and attainment of departmental goals, policies and projects.
- Communicates effectively inter and intradepartmentally with other healthcare professionals and customers to provide accurate, timely information to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.
- Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the overall departmental functions, policies and procedures.
- Completes usual and special assignments with a minimal of supervision and guidance.
- Readily adjusts to change in methods, procedures, working conditions and is flexible and receptive to change.
- Reports to department on time.
- Maintains cleanliness of equipment and workspace and reports equipment malfunctions in a timely manner.
- Provides assistance to radiologic technologists and radiologists as needed.
- Ensures accurate registration and verification of patient information and updates patient information as appropriate, including eligibility and precertification and approval requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Qualifications
- High School Graduate
- Experience with computer systems and medical terminology is desirable.
- Must possess excellent communication skills.
