Job Summary

The Director, Data Product Owner - Master Data is responsible for development, management and adoption of a robust Master Data products across Genentech, in which this role will shape and implement the evolving master data strategy, as it relates to management and usage of customer data across different functions including Commercial, Medical Affairs & Govt. Affairs. As a subject matter expert, the individual will work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and recommend appropriate solutions. This person will be required to forge strong relationships with stakeholders & partners to inform, gain alignment, unlock & solve complex business challenges, and influence the master data roadmap. This person will closely work with a host of internal partners, including affiliate business team, compliance and regional IT, as well as external data vendors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shape the vision and product standards for Master Data solutions, leveraging knowledge of industry trends and ensuring alignment with the organization's strategy.

  • Develop and maintain strategic business process frameworks for data, ensuring alignment with Genentech's business objectives and adherence to industry standards, while owning the scope, vision, and framework for Master data health and metadata management.

  • Lead and shape the Master data (MDM) strategy for HCP, HCO, and MCO, in partnership with enterprise, solution, and data architecture teams, to satisfy business use cases and processes.

  • Develop and communicate a clear, value-driven product vision that aligns with broader organizational objectives and business needs.

  • Partner with the Executive Director of Master, Foundational, Analytical, and Fit-For-Purpose Data Suite, Principal and Senior Data Product Managers, and cross-functional teams to develop and implement data product enhancements, ensuring data quality, usability, and seamless integration with business workflows.

  • Maintain and prioritize the Master data product backlog, ensuring it addresses the requirements of both single and multiple business use cases enabled by the product.

  • Partner with engineers, IT teams, and business units to provide business domain guidance.

  • Act as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and the MDM team, serving as the primary point of contact for inquiries and demand requests related to the data product.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to establish and enforce data governance policies, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, and other relevant standards, while synthesizing business and technical stakeholder needs to identify opportunities for enterprise Master data strategy.

  • Coordinate with application data owners to define and enforce data standards, output requirements, and best practices for data management.

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders and leadership to understand the future landscape and direction of the business to create MDM strategy in support of customer centricity, digital transformation and business growth.

  • Provide leadership to drive the scale of business process solutions and guide the cross-functional team in adhering to data mesh and data fabric principles, ensuring the product complies with established standards and supports scalability.

  • Monitor, measure, and optimize data product performance in collaboration with IT partners, identifying opportunities for optimization and ensuring it consistently delivers value to stakeholders.

  • Provide vendor relationship management and support, as needed.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and be sought after for collaboration in areas of expertise.

  • Participate in various data or systems projects to drive design, establish best practices.

  • Actively contribute to Roche's broader data and analytics initiatives, sharing best practices and insights across teams.

  • Train and mentor other team members, business partners and stakeholders on related domain expertise.

  • Engage with business leaders and end-users to advocate for the data product, fostering trust.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Who You Are

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Technology, Operations, Marketing, Data Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 8 years of combined experience in data-product management, data-based management, key pharmaceutical/biotechnology customer data assets like HCP/HCO/MCO mastering, Hierarchy and Affiliation management or equivalent experience.

  • Strong experience in master data management and data stewardship/governance processes.

  • Proven ability to own and manage the full product lifecycle, including roadmap creation, execution, and impact measurement.

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities, with experience in coaching, developing, and inspiring talent (direct or indirect).

  • Experience managing MDM and MDM integration with various platforms including Veeva CRM, Marketing platforms including websites and data platforms.

  • Experience in managing Pharmaceutical customer Hierarchies and Affiliation in the ecosystem.

  • Experience in managing MDM projects and customer data vendors in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry.

  • Experience collaborating with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy teams to ensure adherence to governance and regulatory standards.

  • Demonstrated technical fluency with data systems, technology platforms, and integrations to inform product decisions.

  • Strong skills in budget management, resource allocation, and stakeholder alignment for cross-functional collaboration.

  • Analytical skills to interpret product usage data and system health metrics, driving actionable insights.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of, or aptitude to learn, business information systems, databases and business analytics relevant to the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries.

  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities to influence stakeholders and evangelize the product vision.

  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding objectives and goals.

  • Business travel, by air or car, is required for regular internal and external business meetings.

Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA or related graduate-level qualification).

  • Work experience in other functions within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry, e.g., commercial operations, field sales or sales management, field sales operations, field account management, product marketing, market planning, strategic planning, etc.

  • Knowledge of MDM solutions like Reltio, Informatica MDM; pharma CRM solutions like Salesforce, OCE, Veeva CRM; cloud platforms like AWS, Hadoop.

  • Proven success in managing large-scale, complex projects requiring strategic planning and operational execution.

  • Experience working with Pharmaceutical Commercial data like sales, specialty pharmacy, claims and Digital/marketing.

  • Expertise in driving product enhancements based on measurement and optimization insights.

  • Ability to innovate and foster experimentation to improve product capabilities.

  • Advanced knowledge of workflow tools, automation systems, and compliance frameworks.

  • Strong problem-solving and adaptability to navigate ambiguous or evolving environments.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $177,100.00 - 328,900. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
