Job Summary

The Principal Data Product Owner is responsible for the strategic direction, development, and performance of Fit for Purpose Data products within the organization. This role focuses on defining and prioritizing the scope, vision, and framework for data health and metadata management while ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals. The Product Owner may manage individual contributors to coach and provide oversight on work. By collaborating with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and business leaders, the Principal Data Product Owner enhances and optimizes their impact across multiple use cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shape the vision and product standards for Fit For Purpose Data solutions, leveraging knowledge of industry trends and ensuring alignment with the organization's strategy.

  • Own the success, advocacy, and strategic direction of the Fit for Purpose Data product by defining its scope, vision, and framework for data health and metadata management.

  • Partner with the Executive Director of Master, Foundational, Analytical, and Fit For Purpose Data Suite, Principal and Senior Data Product Managers, and cross-functional teams to develop and implement data product enhancements, ensuring data quality, usability, and seamless integration with business workflows.

  • Develop and communicate a clear, value-driven product vision that aligns with broader organizational objectives and business needs.

  • Maintain and prioritize the Fit for Purpose Data product backlog, ensuring it addresses the requirements of both single and multiple business use cases enabled by the product.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, test, and release Fit for Purpose Data product enhancements, ensuring data quality, usability, and seamless integration with business workflows.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for inquiries and demand requests related to the Fit for Purpose Data product, effectively serving as the liaison between business stakeholders and the Fit for Purpose Data product technology team.

  • Guide the cross-functional team in adhering to data mesh and data fabric principles, ensuring the product complies with established standards and supports scalability.

  • Coordinate with application data owners to define and enforce data standards, output requirements, and best practices for data management.

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders and leadership to understand the future landscape and direction of the business to create data strategy in support of customer centricity, digital transformation and business growth.

  • Monitor and measure the performance of the Fit for Purpose Data product in collaboration with IT partners, identifying opportunities for optimization and ensuring it consistently delivers value to stakeholders.

  • Train and mentor other team members, business partners and stakeholders on related domain expertise.

  • Engage with business leaders and end-users to advocate for the Fit for Purpose Data product, fostering trust.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Who You Are

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Technology, Operations, Marketing, Data Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 8 years of combined experience in data-product management, data-based management, or equivalent experience.

  • Proven ability to own and manage the full product lifecycle, including roadmap creation, execution, and impact measurement.

  • Experience collaborating with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy teams to ensure adherence to governance and regulatory standards.

  • Demonstrated technical fluency with data systems, technology platforms, and integrations to inform product decisions.

  • Strong skills in budget management, resource allocation, and stakeholder alignment for cross-functional collaboration.

  • Analytical skills to interpret product usage data and system health metrics, driving actionable insights.

  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities to influence stakeholders and evangelize the product vision.

Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA or related graduate-level qualification).

  • Work experience in data management and technical project management or business analysis for 5 or more years gained in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, finance, CPG, management consulting or related industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to coach and lead teams and projects, and lead people to drive predetermined outcomes.

  • Experience with omnichannel/digital marketing solutions or CRM systems.

  • Proven success in managing large-scale, complex projects requiring strategic planning and operational execution.

  • Expertise in driving product enhancements based on measurement and optimization insights.

  • Ability to innovate and foster experimentation to improve product capabilities.

  • Advanced knowledge of workflow tools, automation systems, and compliance frameworks.

  • Strong problem-solving and adaptability to navigate ambiguous or evolving environments.

  • This position is based in South San Francisco, CA

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $164,200 - 305,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
