Job Summary

The Director, Data Science leads and develops a high-performing team of data scientists, driving the strategic application of Predictive AI/Agentic AI data science within the CMG organization. This role focuses on fostering a data-driven culture, enabling business impact through the development and integration of Predictive and Agentic AI capabilities. Responsible for building a highly connected and motivated team, this individual cultivates future leaders, provides mentorship, and oversees hiring efforts to ensure the team's long-term success. This role drives cross-functional collaboration, partnering with key stakeholders to integrate data science solutions into decision-making processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of data scientists across geographies providing guidance, fostering collaboration and supporting their professional development.

  • Define and lead the data science strategy, with a focus on advancing Predictive and Agentic AI capabilities to drive innovation and scalable business solutions.

  • Act as subject matter expert for applicable data science methodologies, including advanced ML techniques and emerging AI technologies.

  • Collaborate with data science product owners/managers, data leads, Machine Learning Engineers, Machine Learning Operations and informatics (IX) teams to develop efficient machine learning based applications, gain alignment and deliver impactful business insights.

  • Communicate findings effectively to both technical and non technical audiences.

  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in data science and AI technologies, particularly in predictive analytics, autonomous agents, and responsible AI practices, applying innovative approaches to enhance product capabilities.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

People

  • Lead and develop a team of data scientists, focusing on skill-building, fostering data-driven decision-making, and ensuring the effective application of data science in CMG organization.

  • Build highly-connected, highly-motivated and high-performing teams by leading, developing and inspiring a thriving data science team and fostering belonging within and across teams.

  • Actively build and cultivate future leaders within data science.

  • Lead or oversee hiring of direct and indirect reports.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Who You Are

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.

  • 8 years of experience with 5 years of experience as a Data Scientist or in a similar role with a track record of delivering successful data science products.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R.

  • Strong knowledge of SQL for database management.

  • Solid understanding of statistical methods and machine learning algorithms.

  • Familiarity or hands-on experience with Predictive AI and/or Agentic AI applications.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex data analyses to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a detail-oriented approach to data analysis.

Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working with large and complex data sets in collaboration with business and analytics teams.

  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch.)

  • Contributions to open source projects or publications in data science.

  • Experience in healthcare, pharmaceutical, or highly regulated industries.

  • Relevant certifications in data science, machine learning, or AI technologies (e.g., Certified Analytics Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Scientist Associate.)

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $214,500 - $398,300. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
