Job Summary

The Principal Data Science / AI Product Manager at Genentech is responsible for driving the development and execution of cutting-edge generative AI (GenAI) and agentic AI product features that empower Genentech's customer engagement strategies and deliver transformative business impact. This role is central to advancing Genentech's digital transformation by integrating GenAI and agentic AI into key platforms, enabling proactive, intelligent decision-making and hyper-personalized customer experiences across Commercial, Medical, and Government Affairs (CMG). In close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including data science, engineering, IT, and product leaders, the Principal Product Manager will shape the product vision and roadmap for GenAI and agentic AI capabilities. They will translate user feedback and market trends into innovative AI-driven features that support smarter decision-making and automation. This role also involves building strong business cases for new AI investments, ensuring that solutions meet user needs and deliver measurable, scalable impact.

With a focus on user-centric design, ethical AI principles, and strategic foresight, the Principal Product Manager ensures that GenAI and agentic AI become key enablers of Genentech's integrated customer experience transformation and digital future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the overarching AI/ML product vision and strategy for GenAI / Agentic AI, leading the innovation of intelligent, forward-looking features that support varying CMG use cases across the customer journey.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., Data Science, Informatics/IT, Commercial Strategy) and the Director, GenAI/Agentic AI - Data Science/AI Product Owner, and Executive Director, GenAI/Agentic AI Suite to shape digital-forward product roadmaps and maintain a prioritized, stack-ranked product backlog.

  • Develop and own comprehensive GenAI/Agentic AI product roadmaps based on deep user research, market trends, business value, and advanced analytics insights-ensuring personalized, intelligent, and proactive user experiences.

  • Collect and synthesize user feedback, real-world usage data, and market signals (including UAT and model performance metrics) to inform product requirements and continuously enhance GenAI/Agentic AI capabilities.

  • Support the ideation, development, and launch of GenAI/Agentic AI-driven features that power next-best actions, intelligent automation, and personalized recommendations-delivering measurable impact for business users and customers.

  • Clearly communicate the value proposition and progress of GenAI/Agentic AI capabilities to internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment with user needs, enterprise priorities, and technical feasibility.

  • Partner closely with the Director, GenAI/Agentic AI - Data Science / AI Product Owner and Executive Director, GenAI/Agentic AI Suite to lead the development of business cases for new and enhanced GenAI/Agentic AI capabilities that embed AI into Genentech's integrated customer experience model.

  • Identify and capitalize on unspoken or emerging customer needs by embedding agentic intelligence into digital platforms-shaping strategy, influencing enterprise direction, and accelerating Genentech's digital transformation.

  • Manage external (US and offshore) consultants to ensure the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and ethical AI solutions that integrate seamlessly with enterprise systems and platforms.

  • Orchestrate collaboration across CMG business functions, IT, and enterprise product teams to ensure integrated execution, responsible AI governance, and transformative outcomes at scale.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations, and company policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Who You Are

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business, data science, engineering, or a related field.

  • 8 years of combined experience in product management, data science, AI, software development or equivalent experience.

  • Experience owning the entire Data Science /AI product lifecycle-from ideation and strategy to market execution and postlaunch optimization-ensuring comprehensive governance and measurable business outcomes.

  • Proven experience in setting and driving the AI/ML product vision and strategy at an enterprise level, with a focus on transformative digital initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage, influence, and communicate with senior leaders and executive stakeholders.

  • Experience managing complex, multiunit product roadmaps and integrating AI/ML initiatives across various business segments.

  • Solid background in leading highimpact experimentation efforts and using datadriven insights to continuously innovate product offerings.

  • Demonstrated experience researching AI/ML industry trends and integrating insights into product strategy and roadmaps.

  • Ability to write detailed, technical product specifications and present effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Strong understanding of agile methodologies such as Kanban and Scrum.

  • Ability to innovate and foster experimentation to improve product capabilities.

  • Robust knowledge of enterprise architectures and solutions (e.g., SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).

  • Relevant certifications in product management, machine learning, data science, or related disciplines.

Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree (M.S., MBA, or related field) with specialization in AI, Data Science, or product management.

  • Experience in healthcare, pharmaceutical, or other highly regulated industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach crossfunctional teams and to lead by example through a practice-based apprenticeship model.

  • Subject matter expertise in product management, with a history of innovating and transforming digital product capabilities.

  • Experience with tools and platforms used in citizen data science, automated analytics, and collaborative modeling environments.

  • Familiarity with performance monitoring, platform scalability strategies, and cost

  • optimization.

  • Hands-on exposure to user research or design-thinking approaches to improve data tool usability and effectiveness.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $207,480-$385,320.. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
